Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, SamuelMaglor!

I'm not entirely sure what the centralizing two-dot diacritic over [a] is supposed to mean in this context, but according to IPA principles, a "broad" transcription can be just as valid as a "narrow" transcription, depending on what the purpose is. It's not the case that a broad transcription is always incorrect (it's just not as specific as it could be).

Anyway, the diacritics probably won't line up until you find a font that's both accessible to your vector editor on your home computer and installed on the Wikimedia server (which can be tricky), or convert text to paths... AnonMoos (talk) 00:38, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What about a dotless version for ? YANAKO-BOLDAS (talk) 20:55, 26 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@YANAKO-BOLDAS: Have only seen the dotted version used! I found a couple of pdf:s from the Western Neo-Aramaic course at Damascus University and extracted the letters from them. AntonSamuel (talk) 18:36, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Warring[edit]

Hello. No more edit wars over File:Regions of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.png. Otherwise, you may be blocked. 4nn1l2 (talk) 16:14, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@4nn1l2: Hi! It is not my intention at all to conduct edit warring, the user which changed the file has been warned before regarding disruptive edits to a related file used as a map for the Rojava article and I warned the user three times and did not exceed three reverts and started a topic concerning the issue on the Administrators' noticeboard, however, it was not dealt with (even though I relisted it as well). I appriciate that you've noticed the matter and hope the issue will be dealt with on the Administrators' noticeboard this time around. AntonSamuel (talk) 16:23, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Please read my comment at the AN: Special:Diff/417800478/417801905.
In particular, User:Bill497 should not overwrite "your" version of map with theirs. They can of course upload their map under a new name. This is based on COM:OW policy.
But, two wrongs don't make a right. The fact that User:Bill497 is violating COM:OW policy does not allow you to engage in an edit war. Instead, you could have made a consice note at the AN‌ board. 4nn1l2 (talk) 16:36, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@4nn1l2: Thank you for the clarification and for dealing with the matter! Just so I understand it correctly for any future situation: If a topic on the Administrators' noticeboard does not get dealt with and is deleted automatically, should I relist it until it is dealt with or is there another type of note I can/should make on the board in that case? AntonSamuel (talk) 16:45, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can relist it. Alternatively, you can contact an admin on their talk page. 4nn1l2 (talk) 17:06, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@4nn1l2: Hi again! Thought I would let you know that Bill497 did the same edit again as he did before to the NE Syria map [1] that he was warned against, however the edit was reverted by another user. AntonSamuel (talk) 20:17, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@4nn1l2: Update: He reverted it again. AntonSamuel (talk) 21:34, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done Reverted and Blocked. 4nn1l2 (talk) 02:39, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@4nn1l2: Thanks for assisting! However, another new user (DongFen) is now making the same edits now to the map, using identical justifications for the changes to those of Bill497. I left a warning on his talk page but it was ignored and he reverted the map again. I think it's highly likely that it is a sockpuppet account. AntonSamuel (talk) 13:06, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Square Maaloula Font[edit]

Hi Anton, where can we download the square maaloula font for mac? Thanks!

Hi! I extracted the font using FontForge from one of the pdf files that the course page for Western Neo-Aramaic at Damascus University posted on Facebook. I've uploaded all the pdf files and the font file (ttf format) in a compressed file here: https://gofile.io/d/ngPbuv The font is for Arabic script - when you type in Arabic, the square Aramaic letters appear. The Color of disputed or unconfirmed areas[edit]

Hi AntonSamuel, I Hope everything is OK.

I think the color of disputed or unconfirmed areas areas can be mixed. Can't we use another color that will increase selectivity in perception? --Emreculha (talk) 14:00, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Emreculha: Hey, if you meant that you wanted to make the color clearer compared to the other colors - I understand. I saw you changed it to grey, I've made it a little less dark as the dark grey was a bit uneasy on the eyes. AntonSamuel (talk) 00:32, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Third Party Sources[edit]

Hello, I hope everything is fine. After heated discussions about the map, I was surprised how I would update it. We don't have anything concrete about third party sources either.

If we count the sources of France24, TF1, RussianToday etc. as third parties, these countries are already pro-Armenia. Iran also supports Armenia. Turkish sources openly support Azerbaijan. Countries far from the region already provide indirect information. Do you have a source suggestion for the source that we agree with? I'm not sure what to do. I would also like you to give your opinion on the second nomination of the map for deletion.--Emreculha (talk) 15:35, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Emreculha: Hey, a useful tip is to use Wikipedia's list of Reliable sources as a general guide first and foremost [3]. The list includes information regarding potential biases towards certain issues as well. Sources frequently used as neutral sources are BBC News, Reuters, AP News and so on. I would also say that it is important to separate neutrality with reliability. There are sources that could be considered to be neutral, pro-Armenian or pro-Russian such as Southfront, which releases reports in favor of Armenia but remains generally anti-Pashinyan, utilizing conspiracy theory-language to discredit him. Basically being an outlet of Putin's/Russia's foreign policies - not a reliable source. AntonSamuel (talk) 22:30, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AntonSamuel: , The BBC published a map on October 27 and wrote the BBC as a source. I also reflected the regions that are in common with Ilham Aliyev's tweet on the map. However, it has just been rolled back with the new "explain with third party source". I guess the BBC and AP Azeri source :) :) --Emreculha (talk) 09:42, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hadruts remaining villages[edit]

Hey, i saw you additions for Hadrut, all sources are pre-December 1st (civilnet video dates to 29th of November) Lachin handover, so the village has unclear situation ;however, unconfirmed Azerbaijani telegram sources posted videos around 3rd of December where there was a shootout between soldiers what seems near the villages and according to video some were of the hiding soldiers were killed rest were taken as POW's, also none of the Russian peacekeeping forces have the villages as part of the mission which indirectly means that they are handed over back to Azerbaijan, i suggest we revert back to changes where the villages are under Azerbaijan's control until we get a visual conformation that they are not, also they need to be dated post December as once Lachin was handed over Armenians do not have any means to reach to that village Agulani (talk) 14:49, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I haven't seen anything to the contrary regarding Artsakh troops still remaining in control of Khtsaberd and Hin Tagher. I read there was talk of a possibility of creating a new road in the future after the handover of the current road. If there have been clashes and Azerbaijan does not consider it to be a breach of the ceasefire to attack these troops - that's news to me, but if you have any sources available (preferably neutral and reliable), I'll have a look. AntonSamuel (talk) 17:00, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think Azerbiaijanis attacked, it was more of after handover of Lachin Azerbaijani troops were driving and came across Armenians hiding in what is left of Hadrut, i can find the video but its hard to identify location although it does look similar to what civilnet filmed on last days of November same road and same village i do not want to engage in guess work what i propose until we get clarity and visual confirmation that either side has it after Lachin handover then it should be colored appropriately otherwise the color should follow what Russian troops have mapped or for sake of neutrality another neutral color until we get confirmation. I also would not trust any Armenian source at this stage, they have not been reliable with their information so far(i'm talking purely post ceasefire) but anyways thank you! Agulani (talk) 19:16, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, hope you're doing well! Would you mind editing the map when things become clear about these villages? It seems that the Azerbaijani side recaptured them today: https://caucasus.liveuamap.com/en/2020/12-december-both-villages-in-the-hadrut-region-chailakgaya Thanks! Mastersun25 (talk) 18:03, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, yeah - I'm keeping track of what's going on and will update the map if needed when things become clearer, as there are some conflicting reports currently from Liveuamap: [4] [5] [6]. AntonSamuel (talk) 18:06, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, As predicted these villages are under Azerbaijans control(i left sources on the talk page), remaining villages are surrounded but its obvious that Russia's Peacekeeping forces map indirectly confirmed on Hadruts remaining villages as well as 2-3 other villages in Shusha are/will handed back to Azerbaijan 37.211.153.197 15:16, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The situation remains somewhat unclear with regard to the ultimate fate of the holdout pocket, taking the back-and-forth thing with the maps into consideration as well, it seems that Russian peacekeepers are still present in the villages. There is a discussion on Wikipedia currently relating to the matter [7]. AntonSamuel (talk) 15:37, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you change the borderlines of Nagorno-Karabakh you will have to adjust the stripes of Nagorno-Karabakh, too. NNW 19:02, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@NordNordWest: Thanks for pointing this out! I've adjusted the stripes now, hope that fixes it. AntonSamuel (talk) 19:13, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, still not really correct. Some stripes don't end at the borderline, one part is even outside Nagorno-Karabakh. NNW 19:19, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@NordNordWest: In which part of the map? I can't see any problems with the stripes in the areas that I edited (around Seysulan and Shusha) that are faulty at this point? (pre-my edits current) Do you mean in the area with a bit of a messy border in the northwestern part of NK, near Charektar/Dadivank? I haven't edited that part. AntonSamuel (talk) 19:27, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In the northeastern part, Tərtər/Ağdam rayon. NNW 19:31, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@NordNordWest: Have you tried refreshing the image? Perhaps you're still seeing the cached version that hasn't been fixed? I've checked carefully and I cannot see any part of the stripes going beyond the borderline or not reaching it in the Tartar/Agdam districts on the current version of the map. AntonSamuel (talk) 19:36, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I downloaded the file and opened it. NNW 19:41, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@NordNordWest: If there is any remaining issue with the stripes, could you possibly fix it? I honestly cannot see any problem with the current version after my fixes. I'm using Inkscape, if you're using another program there may be some discrepancy that turns up I suppose. AntonSamuel (talk) 19:46, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I can (but not today). So there will be six new versions of the file for some "minor changes" that are almost invisible in standard size of 220 px, a discussion about exact editing and work for me that I didn't want to have. Perhaps you understand how annoying this is for me, especially you are not the first one with such file changes and there are dozens of maps required here or here or here and no one cares. NNW 19:56, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@NordNordWest: I'll make sure to check with you first before editing the map in the future. I used the NK conflict map on Wikipedia to check if the border changes were correct so it took a couple of edits to get the border right. If I could understand or see what possible remaning issue there still would be with the map at this point - I assure you, I would happily fix it myself and spare you the work.
