Admin[edit]

Hallo. Übrigens in Category:Against policy bräuchten wir dringend Hilfe beim Abarbeiten. ;-) Viele Grüße, Arnomane 00:19, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please, don't comment out +VfD images, because 1) we have sk:Wikipédia:CommonsTicker activated, so we can see that and 2) after the image is gone/-Vfd nobody will remove the comment. Please, respond on my talk page. ~~helix84 21:38, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If they're being deleted, just remove them, you don't need to put details in the talk page, just in the edit summary. I'll translate the messages. ~~helix84 21:50, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to put such a recommendation instead of two-line translation for sk:, can I? ~~helix84 21:56, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The advantage to putting a comment on the talk page is it makes it clear who is responsible if you're not logged in. Since I don't have an account at sk:, if all I did was just put a note in the edit summary, no one would know who was responsible. By leaving a note on the discussion page, I can sign my name with a link to my Commons user page, so people know who it was who removed the image. Angr 22:29, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, why not put your name with a link into edit summary? ~~helix84 22:32, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Sometimes you post messages at pt wikinews about the images of Agência Brasil, wich are deleted. Do you wanna create an account? Regards, Slade [pics] 03:24, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do sometimes post such messages. I don't really feel the need to create an account, though. Angr 08:02, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Murrayfield[edit]

The image comes from en.wikipedia. Infact I tagged it with {{GFDL-en}}. This happened when I traslated in italian the english article on Murrayfield. I suppose the image has been removed from en.wiki because it was tagged {{nowcommons}}.

So the standard procedure works like this:

  1. Take an image from en.wiki
  2. Upload it on commons and tag it as {{GFDL-en}}
  3. Tag the image on en.wiki as {{nowcommons}}
  4. Delete the image fron en.wiki because is already on commons
  5. Delete the image from commons because the original on en.wiki is missing.

I see a problem here. --Snowdog 17:13, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Mahagaja/Archive 1,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 22:56, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me. But en.wikipedias policy towards fair use has nothing to do with commons (fair-use is not welcome here). I do not understand the reason behind your oppose. --Cool CatTalk|@ 10:12, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your statements on Wikipedia's fair-use policy do not convince me that you can be trusted to identify and delete copyright violations on Commons if you become an admin here. Angr 10:49, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help[edit]

Hello Angr;

I have been a contributor on the english wikipedia for the past couple of months now. When I first started adding content to wikipedia, it was just adding content and editing articles. I uploaded a few images to the commons to include in the articles. Since then, I have become more involved in recent changes patrol and removing spam links from the wikipedia, which has annoyed some of the spammers, one of whom is now sending me thinly veiled threats on my talk page, and I'm sure there are others who aren't very pleased with me. After reading my latest threat, I looked closely at my exposure levels and realized that on the three images I uploaded to the commons, I used my true name in the "author" section of the photo. I've changed the author name to my anonymous handle, but of course the true name remains in the image history. Is there a way that you or another administrator can delete the older page history, or delete and recreate the image with only the current version of the attribution? All three images are currently being linked to on the english Wikipedia. The images are:

I'd like to add that at this point, I'm not receiving anything that I would consider to be a serious threat, but would like to err on the side of caution if possible. Any feedback you can provide would be appreciated. I'll also add that I randomly picked you from the list of Commons administrators because you have been active recently. Feel free to forward to someone else you think may be able to help me out. My english Wikipedia username is Neil916. Neil916 06:54, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, yes, I see that. Ok, if you can delete the images, I'll re-upload them with the same name when I see they're gone. Thanks for your help. Neil916 17:23, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Hassan Nasrallah Hezbollah.jpeg[edit]

Hello.

It seems that you deleted File:Hassan Nasrallah Hezbollah.jpeg.There was a quite vigourous debate about its copyright status of a rather principal character...the debate seems to have gone along...I assume it was not your intention to delete a debated photo along with the debate. Bertilvidet 14:03, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At English Wikipedia, you conceded that it can only be used under a "fair use" claim. Fair use images are allowed under certain circumstances at English Wikipedia, but they aren't allowed at all here at Commons. Angr 18:20, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am aware that the license not is as clearcut here as at English Wikipedia. However an interesting debate of a more principal debate was conducted here, and apperantly also at German Wikipedia, about the photo. When I raised the debate I was not aware that you also had deleted it from English Wikipedia. Bertilvidet 19:10, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Havasu Falls 1 md.jpg[edit]

Hi, I responded to your message on your Wikipedia talk page. Thanks -- Moondigger 18:17, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This image is exactly identical to Image:Coat of Arms of Noginsk (Bogorodsk Moscow oblast) (1781).png and was taken from vector-images.com without setting a tag about it and using a wrong format. I'm tracking and deleting such images of the Russian heraldry by myself. Duplicate tag was set only for short time, used by me to orphan the image and wait for a probable uploader reaction. --Panther 16:22, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But it wasn't a short time, it was more than two weeks! Anyway, I was just going through Category:Duplicate and changing the {{Duplicate}} tag to {{Superseded}} wherever DupeTool recommended it. If you want to put the Duplicate tag back on, go right ahead; I'm not going to edit war about it! :-) Angr 17:18, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No war, peace forever! I'm collecting these images using a special tag, and unfortunately had not enough time to delete them last two weeks. I'll try to do this work at the next several days to avoid such problems in the future. Thank you! --Panther 18:03, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm the author of that image and i'm quite sure i've uploaded it with pd-self tag. Is there any way to restore the image and to find out who marked it with unknown source tag? --Redline 13:35, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Angr, I've responded to this. I restored the image pending discussion. Perhaps the user will understand better why this image was deleted... or we'll understand better why it shouldn't be. Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 16:50, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Angr, you deleted Image:Muhammad 8.jpg because no source was given for it. This picture was copied by me like a lot of other old pictures of Muhammad from http://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/. Can you restore it ? Kelson 10:46, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you mean Image:Muhammad 9.jpg. I must say I'm reluctant, since even zombietime.com says "Source unknown", and since there's a watermark on the image (if you go to http://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/islamic_mo_full/cr017a.jpg and look in the lower left-hand corner you see it's been overlaid with Michelangelo's painting of God and Adam touching forefingers, and the letters ICA). Deletion of coats of arms[edit]

Maybe you have overlooked, that for German coat of arms there is no need so specify a source. According to § 5 Abs. 1 of the German Copyright law, official works like coats of arms are in the public domain. If you meet such files with unknown source, it would be helpful to tag them with {{PD-Coa-Germany}} instead of deleting them. -- 82.135.76.68 06:28, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. We have a big backlog of images that have been tagged as being without a source for a very long time. If you give me the names of some of the specific images that could have been keept with {{PD-Coa-Germany}}, I'll undelete them. Angr 08:40, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

English[edit]

Angr, I have nothing against the words said by Steschke per se, especially because I have no idea what he is saying. But please udnerstand that invading the en-lang discussion with foreign comments is gross inconsiderate. If you think his comments are useful, important, or otherwise worthy, please translate them for him. I promise I won't touch them. TIA, --Irpen 05:18, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on translating them now. But you please remember that Commons is a multilingual project and writing comments in German is no more inconsiderate than writing them in English. Angr 05:27, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for the translation service you've done for Steschke. That was all I wanted to see. I agree with you that commons is a multinational project but this makes it an international one. The deletion discussions, especially of the template this important, are of international rather than multinational importance and are conducted in English. I hope you were joking when you were saying that using EN for discussions about deletions is as inconsiderate as using DE. We really want to hear each other here and decide what's best for wiki. Steschke's attitude was arrogant to say the least. On a side note, I often offer to the Ukrainian and Russian editors to translate things for them if they can't write themselves but are eager to participate. Steschke could have done just that instead of arrogantly writing his comments in the language that most of the audience won't understand. Thanks again for your help in translating them. --Irpen 05:49, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I wasn't joking, and while Steschke may have made some regrettably sarcastic remarks, the fact is, his English isn't very good and he's not very comfortable writing in English. That's not arrogance, and it's not a reason to exclude him from the discussion. Angr 06:00, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You've done a good job helping him to get into discussion. And I had no intention to exclude him. He excluded himself by posting in language that most readers did not know. To have himself included, he should have asked you. I did that for him and we are all better off now. I did such translations before for my compatriots. Thanks again. --Irpen 06:09, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

“Baby Gamma” and new SVG version[edit]

Hi, although Image:Baby gamma.png really is different a bit from Image:IPA Unicode 0x0264.svg, it is the same and it represents the same in IPA. Some differences are comprehensible because of different font. I think, we should inform user at least, the SVG version exists and is available. --Martin Kozák 12:34, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The point of Image:Baby gamma.png, though, is to show the difference between that and Image:Ram's horns.png. In fact, since 1989, File:Ram's horns.png, not File:Baby gamma.png, has been the official IPA symbol, and it's very unfortunate that many fonts use a character that looks more like File:Baby gamma.png for U+264. The character looks to me a lot more like File:Baby gamma.png than like File:Ram's horns.png and should therefore not be used in discussions of the post-1989 IPA at all. OK, Thank You. --Martin Kozák 13:23, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, could you please restore Image:Wappen arfurt.jpg ([4])? As german coat of arms it's PD an does not need a source. --Steschke 11:38, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PD doesn't mean it doesn't need a source. A coat of arms can be drawn from the basic design by anyone, so we need to know who drew the particular image we're using, even if it's ineligible for copyright. Angr 13:39, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Berlin Wall 1961-11-20.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Logos are part of a corporation's advertising, designed by advertising agencies and (except in Germany) are protected the same as any other advertising. Modern flags don't advertise anything and are usually too simple too be copyrightable (see de:Schöpfungshöhe) anyway. I know logos are allowed on de-wiki because German law excludes them from copyright, but Commons isn't de-wiki. —Angr 13:26, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Support in Translation[edit]

Hi Angr, I saw your excellent knowledge about german language. It is for a writing contest in the german wikipedia:Algornon Sidney (1622-1683) wandered about Europe for almost twenty years “as a vagabond through the world, forsaken of my friends, poor, and known only to be a broken limb of a shipwrecked faction.” Can you translate or describe what the meaning of ""'a broken limb of a shipwrecked faction.” is? Image Tagging Image:Alban Berg.jpg[edit]

This well known photo of Alban Berg was created in 1924 - more than 70 years ago. Why we need to discuss the source and so on after that? (Meladina 23:09, 12 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]

What matters for public domain is that the photographer died more than 70 years ago, not that the photograph was created more than 70 years ago. Therefore, we need to know who the photographer is. —Angr 05:01, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is what I found: the photographer was Madame d'Ora (Dora Kallmus) (1881- 1963) is best known for her vibrant portraits of twentieth-century artists and intellectuals from the turn of the century through the 1920s... So what is your opinion? and how we can to keep this wonderful photo at the Wikopedia? (Meladina 08:52, 14 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]
Well, until January 1, 2034, we can't. Sorry. —Angr 15:58, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

French in the United States[edit]

Good work on this map. I'm surprised that Cajun French isn't included, given the high number of speakers in Louisiana. The source doesn't say anything about that one way or the other. How do you know Cajun French isn't included? 136.152.196.124 23:24, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The census data I based the map on counted "French" and "Cajun French" separately. However, the census data is based on people's own self-reporting, which means if they wrote down "French" it got counted as French, not Cajun French, even if linguists would say that what the people in question speak is actually Cajun French. So it's not terribly reliable. There's a similar problem regarding Pennsylvania German. The census counted "Dutch", "German", and "Pennsylvania Dutch" as three separate languages, depending on what people said they spoke. But the high numbers of "Dutch" and "German" speakers in counties with significant Amish populations leads one to suspect that in fact a lot of people wrote down "Dutch" or "German" when what they actually speak is Pennsylvania German (often misleadingly called "Pennsylvania Dutch"). —Angr 23:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All right. I think linguistically, Cajun French would be French (the Ethnologue website seems a bit strange listing it separately). It's good that the authorities report whatever people wrote. As it is, though, the wording makes it seem as though it excludes those who speak Cajun French rather than just those who reported that they speak "Cajun French" exactly. In my opinion, it would have been preferable to add them together, but it seems like a lot of work to change it now, so maybe we should write "excludes the response 'Cajun French' to the census question", or something like that to make it clear what we're talking about. Last days I 've made an offline copie of en:Henry_Sidney,_1st_Earl_of_Romney and now if I open the articel again, the image was disappeared. I showed in my del-log, but can't find anything, but I'm unsure. Thanks -- Jlorenz1 00:53, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've found the answer:00:40, 10. Dez. 2005 JesseW (Diskussion | Beiträge) hat „Image:Romney.jpg“ gelöscht (WP:CSD Image #4 - "Images in category "Images with unknown source" or "Images with unknown copyright status"which have been on the site for more than 7 days, regardless of when uploaded.")

IT is[edit]

It is scanned from a 1974 book, from the LZJ, for whicih I have attribution and it is in the PD beacuse it does not exist anymore. --89.172.126.3 21:33, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, that doesn't make it public domain. It's public domain 70 years after the death of the photographer. Who is the photographer? —Angr 05:01, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
