First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

About copyright[edit]

Wow, given that you're in public relations, one would have thought you'd know better than to go around making baseless legal threats to kids who like taking photographs of your company's cars.

For the record: Photographs of functional items, insofar as the artistic elements are inseparable from the functional elements of them, are not derivative works of the items. This is a long-standing, universal principle of copyright law pretty much everywhere in the world. I suspect you, in fact, know better than this yourself, given that you uploaded a picture of a Dodge pickup (and a very nice one too, I might add).

I wouldn't normally bother responding to a frivolous deletion request such as this, but the fact that you work for Ford might cause IFCAR to be a little intimidated. This is something I will not tolerate here: Do not do it again. Lewis Collard! (hai thar, wut u doin) 15:41, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I do work in public relations and have extencive knolage in law, I only requested deletion and cited copyright issues because some other users threatened my uploaded images in the same nature re Image uploaded. My Licence plate images are "functional items" in use on vehicles. I just figured if some derivative work is not allowed why not all derivative work be deleted, including Fords images, where does wikipedia draw the line?--Angela2109 16:09, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, what? I'm looking at your upload log and I don't see that any of your uploads have been deleted from Commons. Maybe one of yours got deleted from Wikipedia, I don't know. But, we're not Wikipedia, we're Wikimedia Commons, a very different project. If you have problems with the former, go settle it with them. Your extensive "knolage" should tell you that "my photograph got deleted, so I'm going to get some random kid's car pictures nuked to make a point" is not a very rational, or nice, thing to do.
As for "where does wikipedia draw the line", again, I can't speak for Wikipedia. I can tell you where we draw the line: we draw it exactly where the law draws it. Photographs of functional items are legally fine. Lewis Collard! (hai thar, wut u doin) 16:15, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My inexperience as a new user to Wikimedia Commons, as well as wikipedia has gotten the best of me. I now realize that it (my images being deleted) is not a personal attack on myself. My employment at Ford means nothing about my experience with wikimedia commons. I wish to contribute to wikimedia commons in a positive and usefull mannor. With no disrespect I just want to ask a innocent question : Is an image of a licence plate attached to a vehicle qualify as a "functional item"?

It depends. Sometimes license plates can be artistic enough that they are above the threshold of originality. This can only be looked at on a case-by-case basis. If, on the other hand, you're talking about a photograph of a car that happens to include a number plate, this would be mere incidental inclusion, but bear in mind it's considered good form to blank out the number plates on a photo anyway.
Tip, by the way: You don't have to start a new section for each comment you add; you can just hit the "edit" link next to the section header to continue a discussion.
Welcome aboard, and enjoy your stay. :) Lewis Collard! (hai thar, wut u doin) 18:21, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Angela2109!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Lighstrm.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello Angela2109, could you re-upload the original photo without that strange "file name bar" please? Many thanks --:bdk: 15:55, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
