Hello, Andries Van den Abeele!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 15:22, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:De Meulemeester 01.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:De Meulemeester 01.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

What is going on?[edit]

Best Turelio, I have the impression that you are all of a sudden following (mit Deutscher Gründlichkeit") the pictures I have made available, some recently, some quite some time ago. For most of them it is difficult to receive a written approval, for all of them I am confident that they will encounter no opposition at all. I have not much time to go into an elaborate search for licenses. I am on the contrary sure that my additions are appreciated, not in the least by those concerned. The sort of 'harassment' by some on Wikipedia is in my eyes unneccessary and out of proportion. If it comes to deleting the pictures, so be it, but be sure that this will not be for the better of wikipedia. Therefore I am confident that I can read your messages as intended only to 'cover' an hypothetical responsibility of wikimedia, without further action needed. Best greetings, 87.65.117.106 13:20, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In case you are Andries Van den Abeele, sorry, but you are mistaken. As I considered your contributions as valuable, I was rather mellow in my approach.
We may not like copyright — and especially copyright laws in their current form —, but we still have to follow them. Besides, it's not a "responsibility of wikimedia", at first it's your responsibility as the uploader. I and my admin colleagues only take some voluntary responsibility as we want to protect artists/creators as well as re-users. Probably many of the problems with your uploads can be solved, if you cooperate. However, if you don't provide the missing permissions, several of your uploads need to be deleted - whether I and you like it or not. --Túrelio (talk) 13:35, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted images[edit]

Dear Turelio,

You deleted several of the images I added to WikiCommons. The reasons to do so, as I wrote you already, are flimsy. They are a sort of extreme (fundamentalist) interpretation of the copyright. The deletion of the picture on Muurkranten is one of them. Where are you founding it on that objects to be seen by everybody in the public space, cannot be photographed and published? Do you have any courtjudgment forbidding it? I think you should reconsider your views. By all means you have disgusted me of wikicommons. Best regards, Andries Van den Abeele (talk) 08:53, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong 1: I did not delete any of your images. Instead, I proposed them for deletion and gave you ample opportunity to either provide the required permissions or to involve yourself in the deletion discussions. You choose not to cooperate, but instead replid using deliberately ad-hominem wording.
Wrong 2: There is nothing flimsy and nothing extreme in our interpretation of copyright. All these images were deleted by other admins who agreed with my initial assessment. Works of art are copyrighted until 70 years after death of the author. By making and distributing a picture of a still copyrighted work of art, you violate the copyright of the artist. While many countries make exception for works of art installed permanently in the public space (aka Freedom of panorama), the copyright law of Belgium has no such exception. If you don't like that, then you should ask the legislatory body of Belgium to change it, instead of attacking volunteers on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 09:36, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I attack nobody. I just consider that the way rules regarding copyright are applicated by some on WikiCommons is exaggerated. I hope that one day common sense will prevail. Andries Van den Abeele (talk) 11:59, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
