Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:36, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Photos of Nalanda[edit]
Hi Anandajoti, I see that you have lots of fantastic photographs of Nalanda and other Buddhist sites in your Flickr stream. There are also some lovely shots from the Patna Museum. Are you planning to/Could you upload them here as well? Thanks. --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 20:04, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
Dear Cpt. personally I do not have the time to upload the photos, they are all CC attrib only anyway, and if you want to you are welcome to down- and upload them yourself. Anandajoti (talk)
- Thanks! I've just used the Flickr2Commons batch tool to upload your photos of Nalanda to Commons. I've left out a couple of photographs with people in them. My thanks for making your work available to everybody :)--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 15:32, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Dear Cpt. thanks for pointing me to that tool. That is very useful indeed, and I will use it from now on. Can you tell if it is better to transfer per album (collection), or can I just enter my username and transfer all at one go? (There will be some duplicates of course, I am unsure how wiki commons deals with that). Anandajoti (talk)
- Hi :) I think it's best to go album by album (the tool uses the old Flickr term of (photo)set). You can also refine the results within each set using the "Flickr tag (optional)" setting. Transferring your photographs in this manner allows you to add tags to the images in Commons as well as add/fix descriptions en masse. (Additional options will be made available to you once you click "Run".)
- For example, while transferring your Nalanda pics, I was able to uncheck a couple of a photographs with people in them, prefix file names with the word "Nalanda", append an additional line in the description linking to your Commons user ID and most importantly, add the category Nalanda (there's a helpful button to do so) to them.
- I'd experiment with a single photograph first (uncheck everything except one) and make sure things look good on Commons before proceeding with the rest of the set. Unfortunately, I don't see a step-by-step guide for the tool. However, once you get the hang of the options, it's actually something of a breeze :)
- P.S. Be sure to click on the "authorise" link at the top before you proceed and follow the prompts. This will authorise the tool to upload images to Commons on your behalf.--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 12:59, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Dear Cpt. thanks again for all the info. I wonder if you would be interested in helping getting some (or all) of the photos on to Wiki Commons? As much as you could do would be appreciated, and you would probably make a better job of it, as you seem to know what is required. Anandajoti (talk)
- I'll be happy to help. But could you please provide links to the albums on Flickr which you have not also uploaded here? Cheers. --Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 09:59, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Well that's great, and I really appreciate it. All the albums can be seen here (there are around 50): https://www.flickr.com/photos/anandajoti/sets/ Hope this is sufficient. Anandajoti (talk)
- Thanks. But have any of them (or any photos within) already been uploaded here (besides the Nalanda album)? If yes, which ones?--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 15:32, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
A selection was uploaded some time ago. I send some best of ‘best of’ type photos to a friend in Europe and he uploaded them. I am not sure how to identify them now.
- I see. Righto. I'll just upload them set by set and let the dupes sort themselves out. I've finished the Patna and Kolkata museums. I'll let you know when I'm all done (which will be in a while).--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 09:59, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
Dear Cpt. As it is difficult for me to check on this, I was wondering how far you had got with this work? Not pushing, and really grateful for your help, just need to know where it is up to.
A barnstar for you![edit]

Could you please indicate on the file description where this image (File:066 W Sudhana visits the Devakanya Surendrabha (28860923692).jpg), and other related images, were made? Please provide the name of the building (temple or such), and location. Thank you. - Takeaway (talk) 15:41, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Reply to Takeaway & Gerd Fahrenhorst[edit]
Dear Friends, thanks for the comments. Around 10,000 files were actually transferred from my Flickr account by the flickr2commons tool. I did try to add extra information (like temple name, position, etc.) before the transfer, but it sometimes seems to have failed.
It would seem to me that if the tool was developed a bit more it would just auto-include the album name (which would have given more context, and presumably would be no big thing to implement). As it is I can hardly go through so many files adding categories to each one now. I am sorry this is indeed inadequate, but this is the situation. When transferring in the future I will be more conscious of this.

This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:050-The-Brahmins-report-back-to-the-King-Original.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:019 Candakumarajataka (9013392229).jpg[edit]
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:019 Candakumarajataka (9013392229).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:022 Vidhurajataka (9014551508).jpg[edit]
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:022 Vidhurajataka (9014551508).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".
Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
mystery[edit]
not sure the spelling is a problem - but there is nothing to link to for the items in commons or wikipedia for the term Bhadracari - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Bhadracari_reliefs_(Borobudur) - any idea of a good source for that ? JarrahTree (talk) 08:05, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:08 Painting on Paper (9124570348).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:08 Painting on Paper (9124570348).jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
