Hello Amakuru!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. --Apalsola tc 15:32, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Hello, Amakuru!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture[edit]

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BujumburaFromCathedral.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

File:Blue Sky Tower Ulan Bator.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:Infiniti Q70 2016.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

@Amakuru: yes, but it was from a bad flickr account, one that has been known to Flickr wash. Elisfkc (talk) 18:16, 2 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar
Thanks for capturing a non-free image. Well done. Thanks for your help Victuallers (talk) 14:23, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Victuallers: thanks for the barnstar, and sorry to have been the bearer of bad news! Shame really, it was an interesting image to go with the article... Cheers Amakuru (talk) 14:24, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear!! I have just noticed - the criteria says "50 years for photographic works" nevermind who took them. I think It may not be my mistake Victuallers (talk) 14:30, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Victuallers: oh wow... just goes to show I didn't read the thing properly! That said though, what of the other point, that it was not public domain in the US as of 1996? Unfortunately that might still invalidate it, as I believe files hosted on Commons or on Wikipedia have to be compliant with any US copyright laws? Cheers Amakuru (talk) 14:35, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You may have a point there, but it was reading that it was in license because of age that made me check it. The 1996 wrinkle may invalidate it for other reasons but I'm pleased I didn't make a double mistake of author AND age. (I try to usually work making just one mistake at a time :-) ) Victuallers (talk) 14:47, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Victuallers: yep, and apologies again for the error on reading. Feel free to withdraw the barnstar if you like! Amakuru (talk) 15:18, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh you are welcome to the barnstar ... but the DYK is hanging. Could you resolve? thx Victuallers (talk) 23:22, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

a question[edit]

As of tomorrow my ban on English Wikipedia will be eligible for review would you be able to assist me in getting Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Standard Offer, please? I know where I went wrong before and I think I am certainly capable of not making the same error again. 82.41.12.175Z —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.41.12.175 (talk) 08:09, 17 June 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.41.12.175 (talk) 11:25, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Put items/photos in the most specific sub-category, please.[edit]

Dear Amakuru,

Your photograph: File:River_Thames_and_QE2_bridge.jpg is excellent. However I clean 100s of photos from River Thames (category) every 5 years or so, please do not add yourself to contributors, editors, who simply select the name of the relevant river. In the case of the QE2 bridge and all other bridges of very international note/noteworthiness you will see there is a specific sub-category named the bridge, which has a parent category of the relevant river. per Commons:Categories MODULARITY PRINCIPLE a very clear policy you should not be putting items into the name of a river. i.e. where there is the so-bridge-named BRIDGE CATEGORY. Or local sections of the river category.

Thank you, in advance for learning this point of neat, uncluttered image categorisation. Adam37 (talk) 18:56, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
