First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you.

OK, thank you for doing my job, I will keep it in mind. --Isue 20:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC) Siebrand 22:41, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Check your uploads in http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/mynoinfo.php?user=Akradecki&doit=Do+it - I've edited some of the pictures you've uploaded. Yuval Y § Chat § 18:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is a lovely image, I was just wondering if it is a scratch that runs between the wing and tail or if it is part of the aircraft? -- carol 20:30, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carol, no, that's not a scratch, it's the HF antenna...essentially just a cable that's connected from a post on top of the fuselage to the top of the vertical. Akradecki 20:33, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wanted to erase it :)
One of my ex-boyfriends used rubbing compound to get the mirror stuffs off from a telescope lens once, this would not have been that bad I guess. -- carol 23:06, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, it's hard to scratch an image taken with a digital camera ;} Akradecki 00:29, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is no exif information on that image page. I checked before looking like a complete idiot here. Then I rechecked again before saving this entry. Is there a way to tell the difference between a digital image and a scan of a photograph that has been post-processed nicely?
Heh, on second thought, maybe I should know that you are using GIMP <= 2.2. There has been some changes to libexif so some distributions provide a GIMP that doesn't handle exif very well. -- carol 02:59, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the reason there's no exif is that I was using my daughter's computer, which doesn't have my beloved Photoshop, so I had to use the really primative Paint Shop Pro to crop the image, and that program strips off the exif data. BTW...for my cluelessness, what' GIMP? And no, there really isn't a way to tell a digital image from a well-processed one...except, of course, those tell-tale scratches on the negative ;} Akradecki 03:36, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
GIMP is what most people with linux computers use for photo manipulation. Similar to both Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop but with its own separate set of quirks and problems and from what I hear, the gui for GIMP is much much different than for Photoshop. The people authoring GIMP used to complain often about libexif so perhaps that is one of the reasons that the Paintshop Pro people avoided it. There is a collection of screenshots here. When my brother decided not to sign up for another 10 years with the Coast Guard, we both went back to school briefly and he showed me how to work through building GIMP and all of the software needed for it. Back then, GIMP ran circles around Photoshop on a much older and smaller computer. I don't know how it is working now in that respect. I do know that people used to Photoshop complain a lot about how different GIMP is and that when I try to use Photoshop, I have the same feeling of wrongness. -- carol 04:20, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All of those screenshots were kind of old. My GIMP is from yesterday.

Dear Adam, Thanks for a nice image. I am writing an article on Mirages for the Sage Encyclopedia of Perception (see http://www.sageapps.com/SRT/Underdevelopment.aspx) and am hoping the publisher will use your image. Here is the text I am submitting to the publisher for information on its credit:

Sorry for not seeing your note earlier. The credit line looks just fine! Hope it all works out. If you need a higher res copy, let me know, but I'll see the note faster over on my en.wikipedia talk page (same user name). Akradecki (talk) 00:13, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Akradecki!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Category discussion notification Category:Air tanker, Category:Waterbomber and Category:Firefighting aircraft has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Gallery tags[edit]

Apologies for adding tags to some of your gallery photos, I got carried away before realising it was a user page. As it is your page feel free to revert. I left them in place in case you might like them.Petebutt (talk) 19:05, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Edw-yeager-monument-8.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
