Hello, Adam Cuerden!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

CategorizationBot (talk) 10:35, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Adam, I do not know if it is a good idea to dump the entire contents of your memory card on commons in your own personal categories. Be that as it may, if you do this, can you please refrain from putting these images in other categories? You end up placing snapshots of your cat in Category:Jousting.[1] This sort of thing clutters our categorization system. People looking at Category:Jousting are unlikely to be looking for a picture of your cat, nor even a picture of some staircase or the weather.

Even your comparatively few snapshots of an actual joust horses and riders would not belong in Category:Jousting, but instead in Category:Jousting reenactment. Thank you. --Dbachmann (talk) 13:53, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to have you back on Commons. The delinquent that attacked you in the past has resigned. This ex-user is rambling around randomly as an IP but this should not be a problem. Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 02:23, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PD-country[edit]

Re your undiscussed "let's redirect PD-country templates to PD-old" spree: I've undone it, because this is an appalling idea. All PD-country templates should be abolished, as should PD-old itself - the more general the template, the more it is misunderstood and abused. Case in point: clearing out the remnants of PD is hard work, four years after it was deprecated, because it was all too often slapped on without enough info to understand the PD claim, never mind be able to verify it. Copyright pirates[edit]

Great image. You wrote: "The title and subject of The Pirates of Penzance is generally considered to at least be a nod to the issue of pirate productions of their works." Do you have a WP:RS for this? I have not seen one. If not, I would delete this statement, even though I would like it to be true, as I am not sure it is correct. In any case, Merry Christmas! -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:04, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Haha! I found that ref myself, but I'm not satisfied with it - it might just be an assumption on the part of the writer. Someday, I hope to find a better ref for the point. As for your Norwegian, I think he clutters up your otherwise excellent description and makes your point less distinct. Same with Burnand, who I think is only interesting to you and me. All the best! Removing half-toning[edit]

I have been trying to scan some architectural drawings printed in a book I have. I scanned the images at 600 dpi, but the half-toning seems to cause problems on the computer screen at different magnifications. My scanner is a Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 Pro. The scanner software does not provide a descreen setting. I have been trying to use the Smart blur filter in Photoshop Elements 10 (Mac OS X 10.7.5), but not very successfully. I saw that User:Time3000 seemed to do a much a better job with File:Elaeis guineensis - Köhler–s Medizinal-Pflanzen-056.jpg using a procedure he refers to as "FFT filtered", but I don't know what this is (other than it stands for Fast Fourier transform), and he is not around these days. Is this special software? Would you have any suggestions? (I suppose I could upload a png of the unfiltered scan and ask someone else to do it, but if its not too complicated, I could try to apply it myself.) Thanks! --Robert.Allen (talk) 06:51, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo Adam Cuerden,

I am sorry for the multiple small edits to this file. If you dislike them. A reset is OK with me.

I think the benefit with Artwork is the artist at top of the description. PD-old-auto-1923 automatically re-calculates the current public-domain year span. would have worked, too. --PigeonIP (talk) 21:26, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Featured Pictures[edit]

Hi Adam, I don't think we've talked before but as you're a dab hand at Featured Pictures, I was wondering if you could give me you informal thoughts on this image. I think it's an excellent shot, and because of the unusual angle absolutely invaluable. Would it be worth putting it through the FP process? I'm not the photographer, and would of course check with him first, but I wanted to check first whether it has a decent chance of succeeding given I've not been through the process before. Nev1 (talk) 18:51, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I had no idea you live in Edinburgh, I picked your name because I remember seeing you active at WP:MILHIST and that you did a lot of work with images. Sometimes the world feels very small. After your advice I think I'll try the FP process on Wikipedia. The photograph was taken by sending up a camera attached to a kite, which certainly gives it a very unusual angle, and one which adds a lot of value to the article. Based on my own experience with kites many years ago, I don't think we're likely to get many photos of this sort unless people are willing to put in a lot of time to learn how to do it properly. If I tried, I'd write off the camera in no time at all, possibly the kite too if I was feeling particularly industrious. Nev1 (talk) 19:37, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
alternative to kites is balloons I saw photographer in Perth do Real Estate photographs with a helium filled balloon tethered to his car, its a costly exercise though Gnangarra 10:31, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Careful about license templates - there is no such license tag as "PD-Art-Old", so this made the image appear as unlicensed. Also, it can be a bad idea to add PD-Art everywhere: For example, I personally scanned that image. PD-Art cites it being in the Public domain as Wikipedia policy; however, some countries don't allow PD-Art rationales, so that may not apply worldwide. But I scanned it, and, as such, can release my scan into the public domain, meaning that it's 100% useable. That should be maintained. Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:23, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but you own no rights to a two-dimensional scan of a public domain work, so you don't have any authority to release into the public domain that which is already in the public domain which is what your two-dimensional copy already is. This was my reason for changing it from "I release this work into the public domain," not because I thought that PD-art was necessarily the best tag for the purpose. It was certainly better than yours, however. I see that the tag is now PD-old whcih sounds correct to me. Mike Hayes (talk) 10:44, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
[Placeholder: As explained on his talk page, Britiain has a very low threshhold of originality, and I likely have some lingering rights on any substantially thorough restoration. While we can argue about whether Britian should have such laws, it undeniably does, so a little care is needed.] Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:57, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Even in Britain, you cannot copyright a scan. So I do not agree with you at all. Minor retouching of a single image is not the same thing as restoring a whole book. Mike Hayes (talk) 19:58, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You really have no idea how major restoration work can be, do you? Nor how low the threshhold of originality is in Britain. Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:10, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
American courts have ruled that American public domain law applies to scans or photographs of public domain works on British websites. According to Wikipedia's policy, if the original work is public domain, you may upload it to Wikipedia Commons regardless of what British courts have ruled. You can read that policy for yourself on many Commons images obtained from the National Portrait Gallery, London etc. In any case, it was you yourself who uploaded the image. Therefore there can be no copyright dispute. You can't breach your own copyright. So your argument that the threshold for copyright of images is very low in the United Kingdom is irrelevant. Mike Hayes (talk) 01:59, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Commons does not work solely from American copyright. Both American copyright AND COUNTRY OF ORIGIN matter. You are, quite simply, wrong. The British copyright therefore matters. As such, it's necessary we get things right - PD-Art is insufficient, as, in some countries, reusing a PD-Art-tagged image is against the law; you should never change a work released by its holder into PD-Art. NEVER. Doing so is changing a free-everywhere license to a mere sufficiently-free-for-Wikipedia-use-with-caution image.
And this is beyond issues like, for example, if you changed something I chose to release as something other than PD to PD, I could sue Wikipedia under British law for encouraging violation of my copyright, and, if the restoration was sufficiently extensive, would likely win. I don't think doing so would be worth it to anyone, of course, but you would be breaking British law. Adam Cuerden (talk) 01:54, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not "free everywhere", if one has to acknowledge that you are the original copyright owner. You are not, and the few changes you made would unlikely hold up in any court. It was a public domain work before you got hold of it and still is. You are irrelevant to it and always were. Mike Hayes (talk) 23:57, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:A Country Girl Programme.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Possible License-Updates[edit]

Hello Adam,
What do you think about this page:

If you're able to provide a list of files (at least the filenames) with similiar simple cases to get a license like this:

(with the exactly defined authors death-year taken as 19xx - or 18xx - value in the template)

I could promise to take this as an additional ToDo-list for some of my commons-actions
– step by step partly completing everytime when I'm feeling somehow bored
(and for suitable files of them I could also add the Template original ...)

Waud's McPhersonville "combustion"[edit]

Thanks Adam for your work on Waud's engraving & the fine result. As for the legend, in french we would describe it as "L'incendie du fort de McPhersonville" since incendie evoques for us the voluntary act of destroying by fire, while combustion is only the physico-chemical result of the oxydation reaction. Speaking of Waud, have you seen his sketch about the battle of the Crater ([[File:Battle of the Crater.jpeg) ? Just have a glance at the surprising drawing of the black soldier's feet & mouth ( left bottom)... (I used it in WP, in my french version of « Military history of African Americans in the American Civil War”) . T.y. , Arapaima (talk) 08:30, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Brown stains on black-and-white engravings ?[edit]

Hi, I wonder if I can trouble you for more image restoration advice.

I recently uploaded lots of images from the BL book scans to Category:Metropolitan Improvements (1828) Thomas Hosmer Shepherd. (File renaming & improved description still in progress). One consistent problem with the pics is that the book that was scanned shows quite a lot of brown staining.

So I wondered, is there any way you are aware of, particularly using eg Image Magick or Gimp, to automatically separate content that is apparently brown (and probably slowly varying) from content that is properly black-and-white, with a view to throwing the brown layer away. It's not something I want to spend ages on, but if there's any good quick fix that you can think of then that would make it well worth my trying.

Just wondered if there was anything that suggested itself? Thanks, Jheald (talk) 22:02, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Odin[edit]

Hi!, sorry if I upset you but that was not my intention, I only wanted a version without frame. You can't make a speedydelete of the cropped image because is a valid derivative work that complies the license, but you can upload a better version without frame in that file. I made the crop without frame because I didn't found that version. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 07:38, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This image don't will be presented in Galician wikipedia main page until a few weeks. If nobody does it before, I'll updoad a version that don't damage the signature in a few days. I didn't notice it in my crop, sorry. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 09:07, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Restoration: Romain Rolland[edit]

Hi Adam,

I restored two pictures of Romain Rolland, but there are still some issues. Could you please help, at least suggest what could or should be done. I asked on the photo workshop, but I didn't get any answer. Also I plan to nominate them in the FP here and/or in the English WP. What do you think to nominate them as a set, or only one of them? In that case, which one? One hundred years later, we could even find the precise location. Thanks in advance, Yann (talk) 15:33, 7 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adam, could you help please? Yann (talk) 08:26, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Yann: In all honesty, those look really good. A funny grid pattern on them, but I presume that that's a 1914 photographic technique that causes that (I'm not familiar with one, but there were a lot of techniques going round at that time). Darkens substantially at some of the edges; might be worth cropping a few dozen pixels here and there, but that's a minor issue at most. I might edit out the number on the first.
If I were you, I'd try to find out which photographic technique was used, but wouldn't worry too much about it. Worst comes to worse, this might be a half-toning artefact, but a gaussian blur with a radius between, say, a half pixel and 1.5 pixels would likely fix the issue in that case. Run this by Crisco, he's done more 20th century photos than me, I think. Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:08, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Adam. Do you think that there is anything to be done to improve File:AsambleaDeAlbaIulia19181201.jpg? It is an important historical picture. There was an incorrectly colored variant on en.wp but was recently removed due to some license issues. It looked similar to [3] or [4], and at least was a better quality but now is gone. Thanks!--Codrin.B (talk) 08:02, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pursuant to the closing of the RFC "Proposed overhaul of the "Which files should be renamed?" section", a second RfC has been opened at Commons:Requests for comment/File renaming criterion 2 specifically to address the scope of criterion 2, which currently reads "To change from a completely meaningless name to a name that describes what the image displays." Since you participated in the initial discussion, I am notifying you of the follow-up RfC.

Please note that I fully anticipate that the first few days will see a number of additional options proposed, so it may be a good idea to check back periodically on the RfC.

William Faulkner[edit]

I've uploaded [5] into File:William Faulkner 01 KMJ.jpg, as it is already heavily used. Feel free to overwrite if you intended to do a proper balancing of levels - I've spent only seconds on that. I think grayscale is better in this case. Materialscientist (talk) 06:22, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File:Mikhail Tal 1982.jpg may also be worth bringing to FP (Tal was a chess prodigy). Just in case you're interested, I can re-download the original, or any other Anefo image at high resolution. Materialscientist (talk) 12:43, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Materialscientist: Looks good. Get me the original for that. It's a bit grainy, but I think I can argue for it being fine. I've seen worse (and that's probably going to be an FP in a few days). Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:30, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Tal is grainy, perhaps I'm biased toward great personalities. The original is in File:Mikhail Tal 1982.jpg. If you like better other images in Category:Mikhail Tal, I have the originals too. I can dig out from memory some other possible candidates for FP work, like File:Van Cliburn 1966b.jpg and File:Ernest Rutherford LOC.jpg. There are many criteria for digging - importance, topic, age, image character (static individual portrait, professional activity, tools, etc.), etc. - let me know if you are interested. Materialscientist (talk) 03:53, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please. I have a few time-sensitive ones at the moment (anniversaries later this year), so while I can't guarantee how fast I'll get to things, I should get to all of them. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:01, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Please, you can restore this historic image? I intend to apply the image as FP, but I have no graphical abilities to fix it. And thanks! ArionEstar (talk) 18:44, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@ArionEstar: I have a time-sensitive restoration right now (en:Battle of Nashville hundredth anniversary - and we have photos of the battle) - but I'll see when I can fit it in, either in my breaks from Nashville, or after. It's not that bad, to be honest. Lots of film grain, but, I have featured pictures with FAR more, and there's few other issues. A couple specks, perhaps, but given how much is in the air, even those might be original. You might get it passed on en-wiki as-is, if added to appropriate articles. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:02, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
One question: it can be FP if restored? The image has wow? This was a historic moment here in Brazil. Deputies of Brazilian Parliament (Congress) celebrating the ratification of the Constitution of Brazil, in 1988. ArionEstar (talk) 21:36, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@ArionEstar: Definitely on en-wiki, if used there. Commons... 50/50 chance. Commons FP is a bit random for historic works. I'm just wondering how much restoration is really needed. There's film grain, yes, but removing film grain would decrease the value, and there's very little damage. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:41, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The restoration need not be strong. Only a slight removal of film grain gives the picture a bit of sharpness. And see Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Promulgação-Constituição-1988.jpg. ArionEstar (talk) 21:57, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah... that sounds like something that commons would do. Anyway, I'll do what I can. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:02, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for advice on improving the quality of my photographs[edit]

Adam,

Thanks so much for nominating and voting in support of one of my photographs in a recent Feature Picture nomination. This was the first time one of my photos has ever been nominated for FP status, which is quite exciting for me. Considering the nomination and its result, I think that now is a good time to reach out for advice from such a talented contributor as yourself; I have been slowly improving as an amateur photographer over the past few years and I am now the proud owner of a Sony ILCE-5100 mirrorless camera, so I think I have a good opportunity to work toward FP-quality photographs in the future.

If you don't mind me asking, what simple (or not so simple) tips might you have for a photographer like myself? What improvements can I make when I'm actually capturing photos? Or maybe is there a default setting with my camera that I should change? (I haven't changed any of the defaults, at least not intentionally.)

Any and all guidance you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Balanced scales[edit]

Hi Adam. I had found some creations of Durova's here at Commons and hoped she could help me, but apparently she's not active anymore. So, I'm trying you. I don't know if you have the time, but here goes.

I need an image for an essay I'm working on, and I like the scale in the two images below, so please use it.

I need a third version which demonstrates how editorial influence/censorship can create an improper false balance. All opinions are not equal. I'd like an image with the same perspective as the first image (a level scale), but with the thumb from the second image pushing down on the left side. The left side should hold a single popped popcorn (or something else that is obviously very light, such as a feather), and the right side should hold heavy gold bars, as shown below. The thumb's push keeps the scales level, when reality dictates otherwise.

If you have any better ideas, I'd gladly hear them. Please contact me at my talk page at Wikipedia. Thanks. -- BullRangifer (talk) 05:18, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Original photo File:Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis photo portret original.jpg, so my corrections were intended to make image closer to the original. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 17:45, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • And now what we will do? As we know the original colors? Bogomolov.PL (talk) 20:57, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Bogomolov.PL: I did a google image search of Ciurlionis. He clearly has darkish hair, a movie version gave him brown hair, but without contemporary depiction I'd be caution in that. A heavily damaged, including apparent water damaged copy of the same photo is a bad reference source for the photo, but things like [6], [7], [8], [9], and, perhaps especially, [10] all indicate that the colours shouldn't be lightened too much. If his hair looks a different colour than every single other depiction, I'd be very uncomfortable. Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:07, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
      • We have the original picture as it is. We know the original colors (brigtness), so what we need - to correct overcontrasted digital copy. Not less, not more, I guess. Yes we see low resolution (spatial and signal) imagery you provided, but studio quality image is the best choice, I see. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 18:29, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
        • @Bogomolov.PL: I'm not entirely sure which is more accurate, indeed, both might be perfectly accurate but for the different copies of the image - fading can vary between copies, and it's not uncommon to have two prints of an image with very different exposures - take, for example, http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b6933560m.r=Mehmet and http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/ggbain.13752/ - Both are no doubt reasonably accurate examples of their respective prints. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:36, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
          • You are claiming the image much more detailed in the dark (or shadow) parts is a sort of "fading"? But it would be so happy "fading" as it boosts signal definition.
          • Original print was made directly from the original negative, but it is professional work - every detail both in lights and in shadows is visible. Yes, it is possible to lose details in lights or shadows (or both) if make mistakes in printing processing. And dark (overcontrasted) image looks so, but digitally we can resolve this problem making dark parts details visible as it is in the original photo print.
          • And, I guess, we need to respect author's (S.Fleury) vision of the original photo portrait. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 07:44, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think you want Category:Photographs by Nadar (or some sub-category) rather than Nadar for the several photos you've added to that category. (though someone has awkwardly put many categories under Category:Black and white photographs by Félix Nadar which is a bit of a pointless category). -- Colin (talk) 08:08, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Otto?[edit]

"Otto" (1849-1924) Wegener, swedish born photographer, established in Paris (place de la Madeleine), in 1867. I did not knew him. By the way, the portrait I'm working on is the Nadar's Mario Uchard. Not a very famous man, but I find this kind of guy very special and interesting (ie: not common) for this period.--Jebulon (talk) 23:58, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
