Comment[edit]

Dear APK,

It is good to see you here uploading quality images. At least with Commons, everyone knows you are the source...and people don't make transfer errors which omit any direct attribution to you. In the meantime, I became a trusted user recently. I had not planned to do so...but when the flickr review bot crashed 2-3 weeks ago and the backlog of images needing review hit 300+ photos, I reluctantly decided to apply here.

PS: I have marked this nice image by you. It was a pleasure to mark it. Thanks for persuading the copyright owner to license it as 'cc by 2.0':

With kind Regards from Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:00, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. :-) Do you know if the flickr review bot is going to be fixed? AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 21:51, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 • The Flickr review bot was fixed actually a few days after I became a trusted user. It was operating by July 25 and there is no backlog...except a small one for cropped images which an Admin or trusted user has to review. As you can see in the image's history, the review bot did inspect your image here. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:19, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
 •  Comment Cropped flickr images (like yours) end up in this small category here that an Admin or trusted user would then mark. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:26, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, APK!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Even I have to laugh at the category "Category:Doors in Washington, D.C." I hope the snow isn't stopping you from getting to Crew Club. (Poor D.C. Allen must be losing tons of biz!) - Tim1965 (talk) 21:01, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Walking through 4357 inches of snow = too much shrinkage for the Crew Club. On a related note, while taking pictures this morning, I accidentally found two snowdrifts that reached my hips. (I'm 6'4".) snOMG
I hope you found something to keep yourself occupied during the past week. <grin> AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 21:23, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm 6'4" too, and I only found snow up to my hips when it was plowed... heh heh, plowed. I did plenty of plowing, and got a shipment of videos that left plenty of white stuff on the ground. My best friend's in Bratislava, so I am getting regular updates about goings-on over there (Trevor Yates, call your office). - Tim1965 (talk) 16:07, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your valuable additions to File:HobbitHouseWashDC 0414.jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 08:33, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bitte schön. The entry is quite unique; somehow, I've never noticed the house while snapping photos in that area. (note to self) I suspect the original homeowner was not vertically gifted. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 21:02, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Category for Low-rise Buildings[edit]

You are incorrect in your use of "Category:High-rises" for buildings in Washington, D.C. that are less than 12 stories high. If there was a category for low-rises, many of them would fit that category. I suggest you check out emporis.com as a resource for proper building classification.Xnatedawgx (talk) 16:18, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't care what emporis.com says. Washington, D.C. doesn't have tall buildings compared to most cities, thanks to the Heights of Buildings Act of 1910, so I'm adding the category to what most D.C. residents would consider high-rise buildings. Category:High-rises states "High-rises is usually considered to be between 75ft to 491ft (23 m to 150 m)..." I've added the category to D.C. buildings that meet the criteria. So I would suggest you quit being disruptive. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 23:13, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mountjoy Bayly House ... my bad[edit]

Thanks for correcting my editing error on your photo of Mountjoy Bayly House. I missed it when I checked the NHL database since it's listed as the Hiram Johnson House. Sorry about that. Great job with the photos in DC. I wish I'd had this hobby of photographing places on the NRHP when I lived there. --Sanfranman59 (talk) 16:34, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem and thanks for the compliment. I was never interested in photography until I began taking pix of NRHPs in 2008. Washington definitely has a "few" of them. The photo hobby has turned into something I really enjoy. (and even a way to make extra money) Thanks for all your work on the NRHP lists. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 03:34, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've been snapping away in the Bay Area since about the same time (and some in Oregon, Ohio and North Carolina as well). I've done most of San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin Counties and have about half of Sonoma County done now. I love hunting down these architectural treasures that I wouldn't have otherwise seen or noticed. The great thing about this hobby is that there are photos to be taken everywhere you travel. How is it that you're making extra money from your photo hobby? --Sanfranman59 (talk) 06:01, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What part of North Carolina? I've lived in six N.C. towns/cities during my life. Someone contacted me through Flickr and asked if I'd be interested in photographing D.C. neighborhoods and real estate for their website, some of which are used for Washington Post articles like this one. (the print version includes additional photos) I can't upload photos to Commons that are bought by the Post or real estate website, so I upload the leftovers. (my compensation means they retain photo rights) Side note - it was 20 degrees and very windy when I took photos of CityVista (the image seen in the Post article) and Yale Steam Laundry. Brrrrr. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 06:36, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's great about the Flickr contact. Good for you! Last September, I attended a family reunion at Holden Beach. I arrived early and spent a day in Wilmington visiting NRHP sites. Most of the photos in the New Hanover County list are mine. --Sanfranman59 (talk) 21:27, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Downtown Wilmington is beautiful. One of my best friends in N.C. had a house (i.e. his parent owned it) in Carolina Beach. During high school and college summer breaks, we spent many weekends driving around the Wilmington area. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 09:38, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Juliette Gordon Low Painting[edit]

Hello Josh - We're seriously interested in using the image of the painting you photographed of Juliette Gordon Low at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. According to Wikipedia, it appears to be in the public domain due to its expired copyright, however we were told by a source that the Gallery in D.C. holds the copyright...? Do you know anything about this? Would the Girl Scout organization instead hold the rights to this image, and if anyone holds the rights to the original, how is it that you are able to go in and photograph it as you have that portrait and numerous other works the Gallery exhibits? It's all very nice what you have contributed here on this site. We would certainly provide you any credits you specify. Thank you very much!

Romanesque Revival architecture[edit]

Please stop categorising things as Romanesque Revival when they are not! [5] See case in point. This is nothing like a Romanesque Revival building.

Before you classify anything else as Romanesque revival, you need to go over to the article on Renaissance architecture on Wikipedia and really look so that when you see a big square portico with classical columns out the front, and windows with square tops and keystones, you know its in the Renaissance style, even if it does have round headed arches as well.

Don't presume that everything with round arches is Romanesque. From 1420 in Florence, and about 1500 in the rest of Europe every arch was round, and none of them were Romanesque, until the 19th century revival. And don't forget that while they were reviving the Romanesque style, at the same time, they were reviving the Ancient Roman style, the Renaissance style, the Palladian style, the Baroque style, the Queen Anne style and the Adams style and the all had round arches. So please don't call it Romanesque just on the roundness of its arches. Amandajm (talk) 11:19, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki[edit]

Hi AgnosticPreachersKid, as you probably know language projects are now connected by Wikidata - take a look at 2006 establishments: interwikis aren't inside, but there are still language links of left. Here's where they actually are now. Most of interwikis were removed by bots in past 2 years, but some are not. Advantage of removing interwikis from Commons are: (1) Entries are smaller and there's better visibility inside, (2) when you change some category name on specific language project, all you have to do is to change it on Wikidata also so it will be automatically changed here on Commons. Otherwise, you have to make additional edits here. There's another issue: Commons favors interwikis (if inside) instead of Wikidata entries, so if some wiki-category name is changed - Commons will link you to former (deleted) category. I hope it explanation helps. Greetings. --Orijentolog (talk) 14:35, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Edward Lind Morse Studio - fireplace.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

I removed PD-old-70, PD-old or similar templates from the files whose authors who died less then 70 years ago. Now the files have no license and unless it is fixed will be deleted in a week. If you know of other reason why those files are in public domain please feel free to add a new license template and alert me and I will remove No license tag. Marshall Heights[edit]

I've exhausted my online search for images of the Marshall Heights neighborhood in D.C. I can't find any images of generic street scenes, or the big housing development at Glencrest (formerly Eastgate Gardens), or hand-built houses, or decrepit houses, or wonderfully built houses. Nothing of Benning Road, East Capitol Street, or Southern Avenue as it passes through the area. I know it's not the nicest neighborhood, but if you ever feel inclined.... Question[edit]

Dear AgnosticPreachersKid, You're photos of the Heather Heyer memorial are awesome. I'm a musician and wrote a song in honor of her entitled, "The Mournful Death of Heather Heyer." Someone is helping me put together a music video for the song and I thought many of your photos would really add to the story. Just wanted to make sure it would be ok with you to include them in the video. Of course, I would credit you in the YouTube video description under the video. Thanks! Glad they can be of use. Hope the video turns out well. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 02:06, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr2Commons[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first").--A1Cafel (talk) 04:08, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@A1Cafel: Hi. I didn't download them I used the Upload Wizard. It uploaded the highest resolution, it added the license and url, and I added the correct categories during the upload. If I use the Flickr2Commons tool, what's different? I don't know, I'm confused. APK (talk) 04:13, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is not much difference. IMO using F2C can save some downloading time, and it is easier to categorize images. It is not compulsory to use F2C to upload files. --A1Cafel (talk) 04:16, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'll stick with what I know plus Upload Wizard is simple to use and did all the things you first mentioned. (and again I didn't download it) Take care. APK (talk) 04:33, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User problems[edit]

Hi, how are you? Remember, you took me to Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems for having said "Reason? Correcting your mistake." at an edit summary. Did you see this? I am expecting you to take a similar step there also. In the last several days, other than by yourself, I was taken to that board also by another user, for having asked someone else "not to be rude" on another edit summary of mine. The user that took me there has been following me since ages, but they did not show this sensibility when someone reverted me with the edit summary to "fox off" (sorry, I cannot write the f word just as it is). I'm sorry for taking your time, and also for having pronounced the words "Reason? Correcting your mistake." If you took it as rude, it must be rude; although not for me. Please look at the "thingy" at the upper right corner of my userpage. Take care. --E4024 (talk) 18:04, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi APK, anything known about the sculpture (sculptor? age?) in front of the building? As there is no freedom-of-panorama exception for non-buildings in the U.S., we need to be sure that it is no longer in copyright. --Túrelio (talk) 08:33, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Túrelio: I'm not sure how old it is. That was the only somewhat decent angle I could get of the embassy at that time so I wasn't trying to focus on the sculpture. If you want to delete it now that's fine. APK (talk) 08:43, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to delete it, but we need to be as sure as possible that we don't violate the sculptor's copyright or expose re-users to legal problems. --Túrelio (talk) 08:47, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can't seem to find any info via Google. APK (talk) 08:55, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I tried that already by myself. It may help just to ask as COM:VP whether anybody knows something about this building and the statue. --Túrelio (talk) 09:03, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. I left a message there. APK (talk) 09:12, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So, per the fruitful research of the contributors at VP, we now have https://www.lutfi-romhein.fr/ . Would you mind to contact him and ask whether he would be willing to give permission for your photography with his sculpture? (also ask for the name of the sculpture) --Túrelio (talk) 12:26, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will do, thanks. APK (talk) 03:26, 3 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
