Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Binoyjsdk!

Transfering images to Commons[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading to Commons. I changed one of your uploads [1]. Please be careful not to change license during upload. You can for example use http://toolserver.org/~magnus/commonshelper.php when transfering to Commons. The program should help you find the right license. --MGA73 (talk) 12:56, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AG47!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

"Over-categorisation" referring to Category:Thiruvananthapuram (district)[edit]

Hi Binoyjsdk, in general i appreciate very much to get "human support" in categorisation (i do that for around a year) of Indian states and to establish more systematics in categorisation – Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are on my "watchlist" – of the so much beautiful Kerala state  :-)

Referring to the topic "over-categorisation" some contra-arguments of and "old" commonist in categorisation of the Indian states:

  • to establish for a total of around 30 files a imho completely "over-categorisation" – starting to redirects categories to a (imho senseless) "additional/new" Category:Thiruvananthapuram district instead to use the "good established" and (more) "logical" Category:Thiruvananthapuram (district) (please see systematics for the other districts of Kerala!) – is imho not a good idea.
  • Why? imho you're "effort" for these (very) few files is much more "confusing" than "usefull" respectively not "user-friendly" => too many categories for some few files <=, and, therefore, the "established" categorisation for Trivandrum district has been re-established (Varkala and some others excluded).

Please try to avoid such so-called "over-categorisation", but "we" are very happy when you will support in future a "practical" and "user-friendly" categorisation :-)

Or, do you have good reasons to do so as above mentioned, so, please, tell me now ??

Best regards, Roland 20:44, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

[moved to your user talk]Hi Roland zh,
Thank you for informing about Over-categorisation. I understand that. I will try to support "practical" and "user-friendly" categorisation. But i think its better to write the name of the districts category without Parentheses. For example it is better to write Category:Thiruvananthapuram (district) as Category:Thiruvananthapuram district. Other wiki projects like en Wikipedia and ml Wikipedia uses names without Parentheses. Hope you will consider this.
I am new to commons. I will try to do the right thing. If i make any mistakes, please inform me (and you can Undo my mistake just like Category:Thiruvananthapuram (district);) ).
Thanks;) BINOY Talk 08:23, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BINOY,
You are welcome, and thank you for your answer; i am happy, that we can agree in categorisation :-)
To write on wikimedia commons the district names (of God's own country) with parentheses, imho we are able to "separate" much better between cities and districts sharing the same names, i.e. imho better usability and avoiding misleading categorisation, that's why they were used respectively i started to do so a year ago. Personally i do not think that the (changing and incohorent) systematics on p.e. EN-WP (i'm sorry not to be able to understand Malayalam) therefore is "better" or "worse" ;-)
In addition, in nearly all Kerala related commons category and gallery (p.e. Kerala) descriptions (about >100) etc. they are used in the form "Districtname (district)".
And for these reasons (same "category tree" as EN-WP etc.), to rename them is imho "wasting time" used much better for other things, among them to categorize some more Kerala related images in general (among them some Varkala related ;-)), to upload (i'm "commons photographer" too, Switzerland related) some more images or spending "offline-time" for other leisure activities as taking much more photographs to upload on wikimedia commons ;-).
WELCOME on wikimedia commons, and i do not think that you did "mistakes" – you didn't, thank you very much for your "input" :-)
As mentioned, Kerala related categories and some galleries are on my "watchlist", and we'll share "online" times in common interests :-)
Best regards from Zürich (Switzerland) to Varkala :-) Roland 10:43, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

I noticed you've uploaded File:Chenkalchoola.jpg and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error.
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing!

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. There is also an international upload category with no national prize.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in the national categories even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate such files at next step. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.
