Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

The text issue[edit]

Hey. The text issue appears to have something to do with the position of the text object in the SVG file. Three of the labels on the initial version of File:NY Route 361 map.svg were messed up, so I checked out the source. It ends up that all three text objects were at the very bottom of the code. I moved them up to where the rest of the text objects were in the code and reuploaded, and it cleared the issue up. I have no idea why the position of the object in the code makes a difference, but apparently it does. I tried to do a fix on File:NJ 79 map.svg by moving the group that the text was in farther up in the code; it didn't work. I'll keep looking into it. This is certainly an annoying bug, if only for the fact that we have to reupload to see if we fixed it (since it renders fine in Inkscape and Firefox). --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 06:33, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tried a couple more things, as you probably see from the NJ 79 map's file history. From what I can guess, if text is below a group in the code, Wiki's SVG renderer will mess it up. That's the only explanation/conclusion I can come up with based on the NJ 79 and NY 361 maps. On NY 361, the three objects that borked initially were below my grouped shields while the rest of the text was above them; everything straightened out when I moved the three objects above the groups. This is definitely an issue on Wikimedia's end (considering it looks fine when viewed directly in Firefox and Inkscape) regarding their SVG-to-PNG renderer/converter; I'd post something on the village pump. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 07:01, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well...heh...maybe not. I tweaked and changed some settings regarding the text in Inkscape and a text editor and finally got it to work right. =) I'll find another map with borked text and try to replicate my results. If it was something as simple as a couple of numbers, though, it doesn't explain why the text messed up on NY 361's map earlier since the code that was moved up higher was the same exact code that was buggy before. Fixed File:Texas 3 map.svg. What I did:

  • Ungrouped the individual text objects (apparently they each had their own group)
  • Changed part of the text using the second tab of Inkscape's text and font tool (Text -> Text and font) to force Inkscape to regenerate the properties of the text
  • Changed the text back and saved
  • Removed all of the coordinates after the first one in the text's <tspan> tags in a text editor.

Thanks for the help so far! I went ahead and tried these steps on file:Texas 4 map.svg. Half worked, half didn't. What I noticed was that the ones that did work ("Brownsville" and "Cameron") had numbered x and y coordinates, while the rest (Port Isabel, Los Fresnos, and the legend labels) had x and y coordinates of zero. Commonist licenses[edit]

Dear 25or6to4,

As you might know Wikimedia is currently migrating from the GFDL to cc-by-sa-3.0. Wikimedia Commons is also migrating and we're down to less than 8000 files (started with about 1,8M files) . Unfortunatly this number keeps growing because Commonist contains outdated license templates. You appear to be running Commonist, could you please change the following lines in your license.txt?

{{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}} should be changed to {{Self|GFDL|Cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}}
{{self2|GFDL|cc-by-2.5}} should be changed to {{self|GFDL|cc-by-3.0}}
{{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} should be changed to {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}

Can I also fix the images you have already uploaded by adding {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}?

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

Hi. Thanks for your work! A couple of notes - when you upload a photo from the LOC website (or elsewhere), please include a link back to the original. I also noticed a couple examples where for whatever reason you had the author and date info quite wrong. Note the fixes I made to File:Powhatan House Hotel, Galveston, Texas.jpg for example. Thanks for your update to File:NRHP Oregon Map.svg a couple days ago. I notice a typo, however: in the key on the map is the abbreviation "NRHp" rather than "NRHP". I don't know if this error affected the other state maps or not - I didn't look. Is it possible you can correct the Oregon map at least? Map Request: Schertz, Texas in Guadelupe County.[edit]

The entry for Schertz, Texas features Schertz in a map of Bexar County. But Schertz originated in neighboring Guadalupe County and then expanded to Bexar. Further, the City Hall of Schertz is still located in Guadalupe County. So I think it would be more appropriate for the entry to have a Guadalupe County map like this one for Seguin. 25or6to4, could you please make a Guadalupe County map for Schertz? Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Hi there! Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States. We're excited to see people uploading thousands of photos from all over the country! You and others have collectively uploaded 4,929 photos so far, all of which are viewable at Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States (sorted by state).

We encourage you to continue contributing through the rest of the month. Uploading your photos of monuments isn't the only way to contribute, however. If you're interested, we have compiled a list of auxiliary ways to contribute - which include improving Wikipedia's coverage of historic and cultural sites, as well as finding existing free photos that can be shared on the Commons. While these contributions don't count towards the contest, we are still keeping track of them and they are great ways to contribute to the spirit of the project.

If you are interesting in contributing to Wikipedia, WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is also great place to start. The WikiProject showcases the work that has been done so far in covering NRHP sites, and can also help you find articles that need improving.

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. Maps[edit]

Hi, thanks for the maps of cities, towns, etc., you put on the article pages, but it may be time to update some (if you have the time). Cities change boundaries a lot as they increase or decrease in size. There have also been a lot of changes in CDPs. I've created a bunch of new pages for new CDPs. I've found a great site for accurate maps called MapTechnia.com. Check out your map for Elmendorf, Texas vs the one on MapTechnia.com and you'll see what I mean. I know you must have put a lot of time and effort into making these maps. Wikipedia editing is voluntary, so you must like doing it and if you're like me, you want it to be accurate. Hello 25ot6to4, you created many of the maps in the category NRHP maps. As you know the amount of objects on the lists changes. Updating all the maps is not a job to do. You'd better might imprint the maps by a date stamp. But that's not my theme. I am writing to you to ask you to create a map of Rhode Island showing the amount of NRHP sites and the NRHP per 100 sq. mi., similar to all the others. The reason I didn't create a Rhode Island map is the maps were divided by county. But since RI only has 3 counties, creating a proper and useful scale is difficult. Maybe I didn't get the point. Wouldn't it be possible to convert File:Rhode-island-counties.gif into svg, change colors, and add the figures? Doesn't less counties mean less work? Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Paris, Idaho[edit]

I don't have any more photos of Paris at this time. I wish you luck; Paris is hard. A lot has changed since the NRHP listing. Many buildings are gone or altered, addresses have changed, and the listed addresses are mostly poor. My work has focused mainly on the north half of town, but I hope there are still some listings you can find in the south half. Hi there! Kevin from Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States here. I know it's been a tough year for everyone, and I hope this message finds you well.

You are receiving this message as a participant in last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).

Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.

October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! If you haven't yet contributed but are interested in participating again, you're invited to join us during these last couple days. Check out the United States event page for more information. Remember that you are welcome to upload and submit photos of historic sites that you've taken any time in the past, not just this month.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2021[edit]

Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 1,000 people contributing almost 6,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2023[edit]

Hello! In 2021, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 500 people contributing over 5,500 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. You can see the top-ten winners of the US competition here.

While the United States did not participate in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2022, I'm pleased to say that we're back for 2023 through the month of October! I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our 2023 event page for more information.
