First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Aoi mon (Japanese crests of hollyhock)への改名について[edit]

こんにちは。

このたびは「Category:Aoi(Japonasarum caulescens・Monochoria、korsakowii) japanese family crest」から「Category:Aoi mon (Japanese crests of hollyhock)」への改名を行っていただきありがとうございます。しかしながら「hollyhock」は日本語訳ではタチアオイのことですので、「Asarum caulescens（フタバアオイ）」および「Monochoria korsakowii（ミズアオイ）」の方がよろしいかと思います。よろしくご検討ください。

Mukaiさま、お返事が遅れて大変失礼いたしました。さてご指摘の件ですが、asarum caulescens と monochoria korsakowii は、それはフタバアオイとミズアオイを指す語であっても、如何せんどちらもラテン語あるいはラテン語形態の学名でして、英名ではないのです。つまり英語を母語とする者が一見しても首を傾げるような、通常ではまずチンプンカンプンな語といっても差し支えありません。一方、hollyhock は英語の通名で、確かにその意味するところはタチアオイかもしれませんが、the crest of hollyhock は幕末の頃から「葵の御紋」の英訳として広く使われていた表現なのです。これを不特定の複数形にしたものが crests of hollyhock （葵紋）になります。このカテゴリは植物のアオイというよりもむしろ葵紋に関するものなので、伝統的なこちらの表現の方が英語を母語とする者にも分かりやすいと考え、かのようにいたしました。よろしければこちらもご参照くださいませ。--白拍子花子 (talk) 14:43, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
こんにちは。大変お返事が遅くなり失礼いたしました。そのような歴史的な背景があるのでしたら、仕方ありません。伝統に則った名称が最もわかりやすいと思います。ただ、何を図案化したものかを伝えるためには、まだ十分でないこともあるかと思います。英語を母語とする方々が「タチアオイ」をイメージしても「フタバアオイ」や「ミズアオイ」をイメージするのだろうかと、その辺りが心残りです。家紋の「葵紋」や「茗荷紋」などは厳密な分類が行われているわけではないと思われますので、むしろ「Aoi mon」や「Aoi Crest」のように英訳併記でなくてもよいのではないかと思うのですが、いかがお考えになりますでしょうか。
また、別の話になりますが、白拍子花子さんがアップロードされているいくつかは、歌舞伎の役者紋などと思われますが、それらのカテゴリ分けをなさると、より見やすくなるかと思います。私には手のつけ難い分野ですので、整理などよろしければご協力いただければと思います。また、カテゴリ名などの改名の際はよろしければ改名提案などの呼びかけをよろしくお願いいたします。また、ベクトルファイルのアップロードの方も期待いたしております。-Mukai (talk) 15:23, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

すみません。英語の基本的なことが分からず、大変ご迷惑をおかけしております。先例で、アドバイスをいただいたので今回は学術用語でなく、英語で名づけておりましたが、今回の件はどの辺りが「チンプンカンプン」なのでしょうか。
また、議論を経ていただきたいとお願いいたしましたが、了解はいただけなかったのでしょうか。このような対応を行われると他の意図を感じさせることにもなりえますので、面倒ですが改名の前にお伺いになられた方が了解が得やすいかと思います。
別件で、以前から気になっていたことですが、「mon」は英語圏で一般に通じる言葉なのでしょうか。翻訳や和英辞書などでは「crest」などで占められているので、私としては少し疑問があります（「mon」の使用に抵抗感があります）。ご意見をいただければと思います。--Mukai (talk) 15:26, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? It is in public domain by law, no permission is required. Perhaps you may be mixing up something else with this? Or maybe you aren't familiar with {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}}? There are easily thousands of images on Commons using the exact same template.

はじめまして。庚寅五月と申します。白拍子花子さんが上書きをされたFile:Kikuchi Dairoku, president of the Imperial University of Tokyo.jpgを拝見したのですが、これは画像処理ソフトで初版の画像に加工をなさったものでしょうか。もしそうであれば、加工後の画像と寸分違わないものが原典に掲載されているという誤解が生じないよう、概要セクションにも派生作品である旨を明記しておく必要があるように思います。また、元の画像そのものとは言えなくなるレベルの加工を施す場合には、新たに別のファイルとしてアップロードする方が穏当とも感じます（例：File:Marie-taglioni-in-zephire.jpg）。ご一考いただければ幸いです。--庚寅五月 (talk) 21:09, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

庚寅五月さま、お世話になります。ご指摘の件、ご提案のように致しました。楕円フレームについてですが、これはそもそもの原典画像に当該出版物の発行元が余計な加工を施したものであってその画像本来の姿ではないこと、楕円フレームがついた画像はサイズを余程大きくしない限り肝心の顔が小さくなって分かりづらく利用価値が低いこと、フレームを除くことが当該出版物に掲載されている画像そのものとは言えなくなる程の画像処理だとは考え難いこと（アスペクト比を改変したり、白黒画像に着色を施したり、背景に写り込んだ目障りな物や特定できない他人を除いたりすれば、それは「元の画像そのものとは言えなくなるレベルの加工」に該当するでしょう）、などの理由からかのように致しました。何卒ご了承くださいませ。また History 欄のサムネイルに「removed oval frame」と明記することで履歴継承や編集差分も一目瞭然であり、ご懸念のような誤解や不都合が生じることもまずないと思います。白拍子花子 (talk) 18:21, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

画像の著作権保護の質問[edit]

はじめまして、桜螺旋と申します。File:Hisato Ichimada.jpgを拝見したのですが、この画像は1956年12月31日までに公表された、もしくは1946年以前に撮影された写真なのでしょうか。ja:一万田尚登は1946年から1954年まで日銀総裁を務めていたようですが就任初期に撮影、もしくは就任中かその後3年以内に公表されていることが必要です。原典をさかのぼるとこのサイトに行き着くのですが、「出典：広報誌『にちぎんクオータリー（2001年春季号）』」としか書かれておりません。また、File:Sōkichi Tsuda.jpgについての太刻薄さんの指摘も似たような観点だと思います。--桜螺旋 (talk) 06:55, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
