Hello! Sharing, reusing, and building upon prior work is one of the best things about a community like this. This page explains how I generally license my submissions to all Wikimedia Foundation projects and the attribution style I prefer to meet the attribution requirements of the licenses. Thank you for respecting my legal rights and wishes. --Willscrlt (Talk)

Licensing of My Submissions[edit]

I license my my original images (photos, drawings, etc.) differently from my text contributions.

Media contributions[edit]

I upload media contributions directly to Wikimedia Commons and/or Flickr. Each media contribution is licensed individually. Some are released into the public domain, most are multi-licensed under GFDL and various Creative Commons licenses, and some on Flickr are fully copyrighted and not freely licensed. Generally, photos of my family and me are restricted. Photos of general interest are usually multi-licensed. A few images I create specifically for wide-scale distribution are released into the public domain. It is therefore important to check the licensing of each media contribution I submit before reusing it.

Most of my media contributions are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license (CC-BY-SA). Some of my images (like my glassware collection) are released into the public domain. Except for the public domain images, most of my images are available at much higher resolutions for use under a separate commercial license.

Text contributions[edit]

If you want to use any text or markup from my user pages or other non-media contributions on the English Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia site, go ahead. All non-media contributions made by me are multi-licensed under the licenses listed below.

I do request that if you use any of my biographical information, quotations, or other information about me, please do not quote it out of context, and I'd appreciate the attribution. Thanks!

Please assume that the following statements apply not just this page, but to all my submitted text contributions, unless otherwise specified, on every Wikimedia site.

To properly attribute my work, please read my attribution requirements below.
Licensing rights granted to Wikimedia Foundation
I grant non-exclusive permission for the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. to relicense my text contributions under any copyleft license that it chooses, provided it maintains the free and open spirit of the GFDL. This permission acknowledges that future licensing needs of the Wikimedia projects may need adapting in unforeseen fashions to facilitate other uses, formats, and locations. It is given for as long as this banner remains.
Multi-licensed with Creative Commons Attribution and Attribution Share-Alike Licenses
I further agree to multi-license my text contributions, unless otherwise stated, under the following Creative Commons Attribution and Attribution Share-Alike licenses: CC-BY v2.0, v2.5, v3.0; CC-BY-SA v2.0, v2.5, v3.0; CC-BY-NC v3.0; CC-BY-NC-SA v3.0; CC-BY-NC-ND v3.0; CC-BY-ND v3.0; and all future versions of the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY) and Attribution Share-Alike license (CC-BY-SA), provided such versions maintain the free and open spirit of version 3.0 of the licenses.
Multi-licensed with the GPL, LGPL, and GFDL
I agree to additionally license any of my contributions under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2.0, GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 3.0, and later versions of both licenses, provided such versions maintain the free and open spirit of the license versions specified here. Just to be perfectly clear, I also multi-license my work under the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, with no Front-Cover Texts, and with no Back-Cover Texts. The GFDL licensing is implied on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects, but I wanted to make this explicitly clear.
Public domain Minor edits multi-licensed into the public domain
I agree to multi-license my eligible text contributions marked as minor edits, unless otherwise stated, under the above licenses and also into the public domain.
In short, you may incorporate my text contributions, unless otherwise stated, into practically any type of project, commercial or non-commercial, that you like and under whichever license from the preceding that you choose, as long as you give me attribution for my efforts. Please be aware that other contributors might not do the same, so if you want to use my contributions under alternate licensing or my minor edit contributions in the public domain, please check the CC dual-license and Multi-licensing guides.

Preferred attribution styles[edit]

The smallest attribution that is acceptable (if space is painfully tight) is my alias, "Willscrlt", which is generally (but not 100%) unique across the Internet; it would also be very nice if you could hyperlink my alias to "http://willmurray.name/" or to my Wikimedia Commons profile, "http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Willscrlt" to eliminate any ambiguity. You could also use my real name, "Will Murray", but you must further identify which Will Murray by either providing my website address, "Will Murray (http://willmurray.name/)", or my alias, "Will Murray (“Willscrlt”)". Combining all of that together, along with a link to the source material, results in my preferred attribution given here:

You may alter the text or reformat the attribution to match layout or other standards, but please include as much relevant information as you can. Hyperlinks should be active whenever possible.
