The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is an inter-governmental organization consisting of 16 African states, with the goal of furthering socio-economic cooperation and integration. As part of this mission, SADC has issued a Road Traffic Signs Manual (SADC-RTSM) to unify traffic signs between member states. The task of creating the SADC-RTSM was taken on by the South African Department of Transport on behalf of SADC.

Not all member states have adopted the SADC-RTSM, and those that have may not use all signs listed in the SADC-RTSM or may use regional variations. Info for each member state, including country codes and status of adoption, is listed below.

* ISO 639‑3 standard "AFR" will be used for signs in the Afrikaans language.
* Portuguese is the dominant language in Angola and Mozambique. ISO 639‑3 standard "POR" will be used for signs in this language, instead of the national codes "ANG" and "MOZ".
* Several members of the SADC community drive on the right side of the road. "RHT" will be used for these signs. Angola is currently the only country to have adopted the SADC-RTSM that drives on the right.
