Hello, Fentener van Vlissingen!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello and thanks for your support!
I planned to create those versions of the maps, highlighting the Dutch part of the island, but lacked time to make them. File:Sint_Maarten_location_map.svg is now available and File:Sint_Maarten_relief_location_map.jpg will be soon.

NASA images on flickr[edit]

Hello.

I just wanted your opinion on wether it's ok to upload these NASA images from Flickr. The thing is that they are marked as atribution requiered and non-comercial, but there's also a disclaimer below saying "Where the work or any of its elements is in the public domain under applicable law, that status is in no way affected by the license."

So can those images be ploaded to commons and used in wikipedia articles or not? Thanks. --U5K0 (talk) 10:36, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Klee[edit]

Hi Fentener van Vlissingen; I think that the case of copyright protection of works by Paul Klee in the U.S. is a bit more complicated than you wrote under "Summarizing" at Category:Paul Klee, so I added some more text. Basically, the protection of 95 years from publication applies only if the work in question was published in compliance with U.S. copyright formalities, otherwise PD-1996 applies, wouldn't you say? Gestumblindi (talk) 20:00, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

After some more thought I think I may be mistaken in this, so feel free to correct me if needed :-) Gestumblindi (talk) 20:05, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I thought the same as you earlier today, but after asking a question about it in the Village Pump, it seems that these formalities (registration, renewal) do not matter for foreign works. On 1996-1-1, copyright was restored for all copyrighted works abroad, and now these works get the U.S. copyright term as if copyright had been properly registered and renewed. In the words of User:Clindberg:

Lastly, renewal does not matter for URAA-restored works -- they get the U.S. term as if they had been properly renewed.

This seems logical, as otherwise the restoration of copyright would have been useless for most foreign works, which would fall short of the URAA goal of universally protecting copyrighted works. Fentener van Vlissingen (talk) 20:50, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I changed the wording again, basically reverting back to your version, but adding "However, this only applies to works where the country of origin is Germany, not Switzerland" for clarity (it may be redundant, but otherwise the summary wouldn't say anything about the U.S. status of Swiss works by Klee). Gestumblindi (talk) 20:55, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I think your addition indeed improves clarity on the issue. Fentener van Vlissingen (talk) 21:00, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Universiteit van Franeker.jpg[edit]

Hi,

May I ask where you found this color version of the image? Also, is there a higher quality version available?

As Kobina Sekyi was born in 1892 I doubt that the photo was made in XIX c. I think, dating it to around 1910 is more reliable. Would you check your source and fix it? Ankry (talk) 16:14, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you're right indeed. I fixed it. Fentener van Vlissingen (talk) 04:24, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

13Weesperpoort, 1850.jpg: versiegeschiedenis[edit]

1867 (of 1861?) lijkt me inderdaad correcter. Fentener van Vlissingen (talk) 13:08, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

?Are you sure about this image[edit]

Good afternoon, I'm an Iranian and was thinking about [Mosselstein.jpg|this image]. Just used google translate to translate what you fellas added in Nederland language about this image. It looks you think this image is taken in Band-e Charak. We think it's taken in kharg island. As it's written in the article:

In 1753 the Dutch Empire established both a trading post and a fort on the island after securing perpetual ownership of the island from Mir Nasáir, the Arab ruler of Bandar Rig, in return for a present of 2000 rupees.[2] In 1766 the Dutch fort was captured by Mir Mahanna, the governor of Bandar Rig.[3]

In some persian articles, this fort is called "Fort Mosselstein". e.g.

[1]

or

[2]

Even in dutch articles you can see such name. e.g.

[3]

How about to change the discription? I'm not familiar with Nederland language then could you change the discriptions? Rohalamin (talk) 09:57, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Rohalamin: nobody knows where image was taken. It could be Kharg, or Band-e Charak, but also five other different places. I added explanation in all speculative photos, and categorized them under Dutch colonial architecture in Iran. --Orijentolog (talk) 23:53, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
