Identification of flower family and species is made with reference to L.R. Blackwell 2002 "Wildflowers of the Eastern Sierra and adjoining Mojave Desert and Great Basin" (ISBN 1551052814), L.R. Blackwell 1998 "Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada and the Central Valley" (ISBN 1551052261), E.L. Horn 1998 "Sierra Nevada Wildflowers" (ISBN 0878423885), C. Rose & S. Ingram 2015 "Rock Creek Wildflowers" (ISBN 9780943460543), E. Wenk 2015 "Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada and John Muir Trail" (ISBN 9780899977386), K. Wiese 2012 "Sierra Nevada Wildflowers" (ISBN 9780762780341), J.M. Laws 2007 "The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada" (ISBN 9781597140522), J.D. Stuart & J.O. Sawyer 2001 "Trees & Shrubs of California" (ISBN 9780520221109).

Also consulted are CalPhotos (http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/flora) or category images on Wikimedia Commons. Subtle distinctions and unusual species are checked with N.F. Weeden 1996 "A Sierra Nevada Flora" (ISBN 0899972047) and especially "The Jepson Manual: Vascular Plants of California", 2nd edition (ISBN 9780520253124). When unsure, I usually do not upload an image, except in cases like the sedges, where I'd love to get help with identifying them.

Using The Jepson Manual, 2nd Edition, these galleries are organized with Monocots first, then Dicots. Within the Dicots, the order is first the Rosid group, then Poppy and Buttercup, then the Asterid group. Within those sections, families are alphabetical by common name (except Rose is first in the Rosids).

My thanks to the Outdoor Recreation Dept at UC Boulder and especially to the Botany Dept at Harvard, who got me intrigued with alpine plants and gave me some background; more recently, thanks to the Bristlecone chapter of the California Native Plant Society [1].
