Commons:Picture requests[edit]

Hi. I added some guidelines to Commons:Picture requests, adapted from what we use on en:Wikipedia:Requested pictures. Hope they make sense to you. BTW, I could not find any images related to your Mask/Stralsund request, regardless of copyright status. Do you have more info? I also changed your empty Stralsund link into a link to de:Stralsund. Thanks -- Chris 73 00:26, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with Commons:Picture requests. I removed the de: link, as it might suggest that it is the article I need the photo for, which is not the case. :-)--tsca 01:20, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
So where would you like the image? -- Chris 73 01:21, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I thought Photo needed for pl:Śmiech w sztuce średniowiecza. would be enough?--tsca 01:25, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Ah, right. I didn't look at Commons:Picture requests, my fault -- Chris 73 01:26, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Well, I'm going to bed now, in despair of the future of my country (and thereby the world). As for Wikimedia Commons, for now I'll leave things as they are now. Thanks for pushing me to be clear on the status of my images, even if I don't like where you're trying to draw the line. ^_^ -- Toby Bartels 09:35, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)

copyright tags for Image:UNESCO.png[edit]

Hi. Do you know the copyright tags for Image:UNESCO.png and Image:UNESCO-logo.png? Also, they seem to be redundant, maybe we can list one for deletion? -- Chris 73 04:18, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi, Cris. You've kind a caught me while I was submitting the info.
I added license information, and also added delete to Image:UNESCO.png.
--DIG 05:57, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Thanks -- Chris 73 05:52, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Sure. --DIG 05:57, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Nicotinana[edit]

Is Nicotinana a typo? On the photo it says nicotiana (two, not three n's)?
--tsca
12:07, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yes, it is a typo. Moved the page to Nicotiana and listed Nicotinana as a speedu delete. Thanks-- Chris 73 01:37, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Tijuana performers[edit]

Hi. Is Image:Tijuana-performers.jpg also CC-BY-SA? Thanks for the cool images -- Chris 73 05:11, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It is indeed. I just forgot to add my tag. Fixed now! Thanks for pointing that out to me. Nadavspi 12:27, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

category:Latin pronunciation[edit]

I notice you have removed Category:Latin pronunciation from several pronunciation files. These are part of Commons:Pronunciation files requests and the category is meant to comprise what resources are available (following, e.g. Category:Dutch pronunciation). Please explain. —Muke Tever 17:47, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

These categories are also used to show the different wiktionary projects what words are available on the Commons. I think you should revert these changes. GerardM 18:31, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Do not bother, I have done it for you. GerardM 18:38, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I removed the categories from the latin pronunciation files because they are also listed in Latin pronunciation, so they would not be listed twice. This is similiar to the use of images here on the commons (at least that is what the discussion is leaning to, and similiar to other sound files). But if you prefer categories, then I can live with that, too. However, there is another point: You added the colon again to [[:Image:la-cls-acervus.ogg|la-cls-acervus.ogg]] on Latin pronunciation: Special:Unusedimages is used to find images that are not yet listed on image pages, and your use of colons lists the .ogg files as unused. While now there is a limited number of sound files, the list of unused images will probably become very cluttered in the future with more files. Since removing the colons did not change the layout of Latin pronunciation on my browser I removed the colons so the sound files are listed as used. Is there any strong reason for you to use the colons? If not, could you please remove the colons again from Latin pronunciation? This would make finding unused images easier. Thanks -- Chris 73 22:57, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Good work! Are you on IRC?

Space shuttle image[edit]

Hi! When I saw MIR I thought of an image I saw on pl-Wiki a while back - 3 examples of possible future space shuttle design. http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafika:Wahadlowiec_projekty.jpeg Now the problem is that I can't seem to find it anywhere and I don't know whether it's PD (or GFDL or comatible) or not. It could be by NASA but... Well, I don't want to take guesses. If you find the time to look it up somewhere maybe you'll have better luck then I did. --TOR 11:49, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the links but I actually only wanted to know the image's copyright status so that I could upload it here. We may have to eventually delete it from our Wiki and it would be a shame not to have a nice image like this one. --TOR 12:08, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Categories and images[edit]

FYI, the current CVS version of MediaWiki shows thumbnails of images on category pages - that's why I don't bother to put them on separate article pages. 1.4 is likely to go final within the next two months or so.--Eloquence

Thanks for the notice. This is an important change. I added acomment about that to the commons village pump, so we don't waste effort in creating separate pages for image groups. -- Chris 73 Talk 13:49, Nov 9, 2004 (UTC)

Dir sei gedankt[edit]

New colours[edit]

Chris! Aren't you forgetting about the categories in the templates? :) I can help ya out with the pl- templates. Cheers. --TOR 22:45, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yup, just noticed it. Please go ahead and do the polish templates. Maybe use Template:User en-1 as a basis, I'll do all of them in this style. -- Chris 73 22:56, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Yup. Shortly. :) --TOR 23:09, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the notice -- new format's neat. A-giâu 23:46, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Boilerplate texts[edit]

I tried unsuccesfully to steal one of your boilerplate texts but couldn't manage to find the proper one :) As a native English speaker, could you think of something in English to ask unused-image people to make an effort ? I'm intending to steal it. Thx :) villy 00:23, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I know of course about the current debate at the Village Pump, Chris. But I still incline to seperate articles. Special:Unusedimages is growing badly and you sometimes notice a user who obviously have an habit not to bother to categorize whatsoever (apart from licences category) nor to create an categorized article with thumbs. That was my concern :) villy 00:47, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I probably read your text too fast. It'll be just fine. Thanks:) villy 01:08, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Image tags[edit]

Chris, all of the images I uploaded to commons come from Wikipedias in various languages. These images did not have copyright information, so I merely state which Wikipedia they came from. If it's not OK, let me know what I should do. Thanks.—Ezhiki 19:18, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

From Wdshu[edit]

Chris, thanks for your notification. I have added the "status" of these images already. --Wdshu 05:04, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi, Chris, thanks for your further message. Originally, I assumed that all images uploaded to the different versions of Wiki by the original author are "legitimate" to be stored at Wiki Commons. Based upon your explanation, I can NOT add the status of these images for the original author. Accordingly, I do not think I have too much to add at this moment. I believe I had added ALL available information when I uploaded these images from other versions of Wiki. In the future, if the image is not labeled any specific status of copyright information, I will NOT put them here, anyway. Thanks for your hard-working, again. --Wdshu 17:25, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

del[edit]

Hi Chris, can you delete the elephant tracks image i just uploaded? I forgot to make the compression, its 1,6 Mb (ouch). I'll upload a better one in a sec. Cheers, muriel@pt 10:52, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  • Yes, better idea definitely! Thanks, muriel@pt 13:16, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Image Celsius.jpg[edit]

Hi Chris,

Sorry for the copyrights. I corrected this in all images I uploaded, with exception of the one of Anders Celsius (Celsius.jpg), which has no references in the english Wikipedia. I deleted it in the article I wrote about Anders Celsius in the portuguese Wikipedia. The image may be deleted in Commons. Could you please tell me whether where all the licences tags (templates) are located in commons? Thank you. --Marcelo Schlindwein 15:47, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

You wrote: Actually, found another source andmore info about the image (see Image:Celsius.jpg). I uploaded ahigher resolution image, and also declared it Public Domain, since the copyright expired -- Chris 73 15:56, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Great! I inserted the image in pt:Anders Celsius again. Thank you. --Marcelo Schlindwein 16:04, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Tribology[edit]

Hello Chris,

I made an error when downloading a picture. Sorry ! I prefer to download pictures on Commons rather than on the french WP, so that they may be used more largely. In the next weeks you will find a lot of pictures about Tribology. --Jean-Jacques MILAN 13:29, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Templates[edit]

-guety 19:01, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Logo rights[edit]

The requirement for a copyright transfer to the Foundation is relatively recent as discussions have shown that there are problems enforcing our trademarks on GFDL logos. All the existing logos except the Wikicommons logo are to be considered GFDL (in the case of MW, public domain) pending further clarification. See m:Logos for the current status.--Eloquence 22:10, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Copyright Tags[edit]

Your Message: Hi. Could you add copyright tags to the images you uploaded? For now I have tagged your image as "PD" as described in the comments. Thanks for the images -- Chris 73 23:54, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I would have done it, but I didn´t tag the pictures but the page containing the pictures Laurel wreath. Is that false?, or should I tag both? --Gabor 00:47, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Fair Use[edit]

Hallo Chris!
--Horst Frank 15:29, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Deletion[edit]

Ugh, can you warn me next time when you nominate a picture of mine for deletion? I think the original of my 27 mph sign picture is now irretrevably gone. This really sucks, because I wanted to fix the crop so that it was better aligned and now I can't do that as I have no original. Anthony 16:12, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

User:AppleWorks Warrior[edit]

Chris, you deleted an image by AppleWorks Warrior, then left a message on his page telling him not to upload copyrighted images. Do you have any sort of evidence that this image was indeed copyrighted? If you do, could you show it to me? I've asked AppleWorks to upload a new copy of the image because it is most likely not a copyvio. — Tuesday Teen | Talk | Mail]] 19:19, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It should be noted that Tuesday Teen is a sock-puppet of AppleWorks Warrior, and that Tuesday Teen has a history of vandalism and sock-puppetry. — Chmod007 23:57, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Unkaterorisiert-Kategorie[edit]

--Horst Frank 00:26, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Utah map[edit]

You have marked my upload of Image:Utah ref 2001.jpg as unknown, I listed where I got it from and displayed exactly the message that was requested by the source. They say it is available for non-commercial use with those provisos but are not specific about the exact copyright. The same image appears on the German wikipedia and there is claimed to GDFL but I see no evidence of that. Bob Palin 00:49, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Searching[edit]

Hi Chris. Typing the word England and searching for it returns nothing in the article titles. This is wrong because i created a few articles with this word on the title. Elizabeth I of England is an example. So either there is something wrong with the search or something i dont know. Can you explain?? I posted this question on Village Pump but was promptly ignored... All the best, muriel@pt 11:10, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Re:Asian language license info[edit]

Hi, Chris. I visited the page about the source of these pictures related to wetland in China. It seems that the uploader posted a message on a discussion board of photography and requested some photos about wetland in China. Somebody responded to the message (and probably sent these photos to the email account of the uploader). However, I don't see clear information about the status of copyright of these pictures. The uploader seems not mention too much about this while making correspondence with the original photographer. Probably you have to ask the uploader to provide more information regarding the matter. Best, --Wdshu 18:59, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Tags[edit]

Which images you mean? Halibutt 01:06, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I corrected that, thanks for being vigilant :) As to the license in my {{User:Halibutt/ogg}} - I'm not sure I know what you mean. That is the license I use for all my .ogg files in English wiki (barely any transferred to commons so far). I decided to modify the GNU rather than use the plain and simple original tag since plenty of people constantly forget to credit me for my work, which I really hate. Halibutt 08:18, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Bah, now I get it. Of course, no problem at all. I'll change that asap. Cheers! Halibutt 21:08, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Screenshots and copyrights[edit]

Hello,

You re-inserted template:screenshot into Image:C64_screenshot.png. Please read carefully what you've done:

...the commons does not accept fair-use images and therefore the image will be deleted.

The template you inserted (which informs the reader that the picture is illegally in the commons, and going to be removed soon) does not fit the image, which does not contain, quote: a screenshot of a possibly copyrighted program! Please reconsider the use of this template on pictures which do not violate Commons' Guidelines and should not (must not) be deleted!

I go and create a template:free screenshot template to replace yours. Thank you. --grin 09:54, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Flags with borders[edit]

Chris, I noticed you removed the black border from Image:Flag_of_the_Faroe_Islands.png. Why did you do that? Several of the flags I uploaded have black borders of 4px width. I do that everytime a flag has a large white area on the outer edges, as the flags will usually be placed on a white or very light background. If for some reason flags on Commons are supposed to have no border, I could stop doing that and could remove the border from all flags that currently have one. -- Sebastian Koppehel 20:06, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Please do not do that unless the flag is supposed to have a black border according to the specification of it, these should replicate the national insignia as closely as possible. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 07:42, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Hallo. -- Chris 73 00:44, 2. Dez 2004 (CET)
Well, then let's not have black borders. That is fine by me, but the background on which the flags sit should be of a darker hue so that flags like that of Pakistan or that of Madagascar don't look smaller than they are. I think gray would be suitable, as flags do not usually have large areas of gray. Here's how it could be done:

Or let's give them a black border:

By the way, this befits all flags quite nicely, not only those that really need such help. It's a little complicated, what with the HTML code and all, but it may ultimately be the cleanest solution. -- Sebastian Koppehel 03:56, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Battle of Austerlitz[edit]

Hi Chris,

I created the article Battle of Austerlitz) (with a ")" at the end) and later remarked my mistake. I merged the image there in the article Battle of Austerlitz (WITHOUT ")"), that already existed. Could you please delete the article with the wrong name, please? Thank you, Marcelo Schlindwein 13:46, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Category scheme Astronomy[edit]

Hi Chris, could you please check the category names in the proposal? I'm not very used in writing english and there may be some errors in spelling and using capitals. Do you have any further suggestions? -- Srbauer 13:53, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Of course the scheme is not complete, but do we really need a complete scheme for the beginning? I think splitting should be done by need if there are too many images in a cat - just let us see what we'll get. The splitting of spacemen seems ok to me. -- Srbauer 20:41, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

thx for notice[edit]

I've got your message. Yet, Image:Wetland ChongMingDongTan ShangHai China1.jpg, Image:Wetland ChongMingDongTan ShangHai China2.jpg, and Image:Wetland ChongMingDongTan ShangHai China3.jpg were only given non-commercial liscence, and I can't get more liscence now. Thanks.--冷玉 09:27, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Copyright Discussion on Village Pump[edit]

Thanks for posting about the discussion of the copyright status of my images taking place on the village pump. Just as you said, I can't see any problem either but it was very nice of you to let me know :-) -- Thebrid
