nato a New York in una famiglia della più antica aristocrazia americana, Mario Andrea Valori (ma il primo nome è da ignorarsi) completò i suoi studi ad Harvard per poi perfezionarsi ad Oxford, dove ottenne il suo dottorato. dopo numerosi viaggi in Europa, si stabilì in un lussuoso appartamento sulla 35a strada Est di Manhattan, dove passa il tempo arricchendo le sue collezioni d'arte (specialmente dipinti), frequentando i salotti musicali più interessanti e accettando gli obblighi sociali che la sua posizione gli impone. unito da una forte amicizia con il procuratore generale di New York John F.-X. Markham, Andrea Valori figura come una sorta di amicus curiae nelle investigazioni di quest'ultimo, portando a felice soluzione molti dei più importanti e noti crimini nella storia della città.
o, meglio, avrebbe fatto tutto questo se si fosse chiamato Philo Vance.
