the usage of categories as in Category:Karl I of Austria[edit]

hello Akela3, you have added to the image Image:Emperor Karl I of Austria-Hungary.jpg many other categories, something I noticed you do on other images as well. That is not necessary. Once an image is one category, and that category itself is listed in other ones, the image itself is not listed under each one again separately. For example "Karl I of Austria" is already listed under "House of Habsburg-Lorraine", which itself is listed under many other categories. By listing all images in double or triple-categories, it makes the navigation more complicated. To get an understanding of the proper categorisation scheme, I can recommend to read up on this link here where everything is explained Commons:Categories#Over-categorization. feel free to ask if you have further questions. sincerely Gryffindor 15:37, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

The correct usage of categories[edit]

hello there Akela3, I am not sure if you can read English or not, but I hope this works. Again, please do not put extra categories on images that are already in one category that is connected to the rest. You have done so again here [1] with one of the images of Archduke Joseph Anton Johann of Austria. His category is already listed under "Field Marshals", therefore you don't have to add his image again separately if the main category "Archduke Joseph Anton Johann of Austria" is already listed under "Field Marshals". It's very simple, makes navigation easier and saves you a lot of work from adding multiple categories to each image. Please read up on the Commons:Categories#Over-categorization, which is in multiple languages, to help you familiarise yourself with correct categorisations. thank you Gryffindor 23:01, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion warning Image:Friedrich Austria przemysl 1915.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

You have uploaded a duplicate, but you want to delete the "original", see date of uploading. Why? Mutter Erde 21:21, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

I saw the original when the duplicate was already uploaded, with plenty multilingual information. Then I judged it more simple to replace the original by my duplicate. BUT If it is of importance, then I am ready to transfer all the information of “my” image to the original, rewrite my image as duplicate and restore original order. Should I? Akela3 21:28, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

No it`s OK. Let´s delete it. Greetings Mutter Erde 21:38, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I arranged all links on EN, ES, HU, PL pages accordingly. Akela3 21:56, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Hautecombe[edit]

Hi. I have got one question: I saw that you added same pictures from the interior of Hautecombe Abbey. In two weeks I would like to go there to take pictures of the tombs of king Charles Felix and Umberto II and their wives. But they told me by e-mail that it is not allowed to take any pictures there. Can you please tell me whether it is easy to take pictures anyhow ? Would be nice if you could give me some tips. Thanks User:krischnig 20:38, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

It is not always controlled. You need some luck. It depends, how many visitors are crowded there the same time. The "modern" tombs (Umberto-II) are in the entry hall, no chance to trick, I could not make any photo either. The older tombs (Felix) are inside the church. If there are enough crowd, and you dont use flash, it is possible. Hi. Akela3 13:40, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your explanation. Just one question: I read that the tour is audioguided and that one group of 25 people are leaving every 10 minutes. Are the groups accompanied by a guide or can you walk around on your one? Thanks User:krischnig 17:20, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

When we were there, the guide was there only in the first minutes, then went to receive the next group. Visitors can walk around relatively independently (a slow temporized illumination sequence follows the audioguided explanation, so there are certain time limits between stations). Akela3 20:57, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you again for your help. LAst week, I was in Hautecombe and I could take pictures of the tombs of both kings and queens, even of Umberto II and Charles Felix. I will add them in the kings' biographies here in wikipedia. 00:06, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Good news! I propose to upload your photos directly to Commons (not only to DeWiki). Akela3 16:32, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, can you please tell me how to upload photos to commons? By the way: I went to Hautecombe at noon, when there are no visiting hours. But at 12 o'clock there is a mass. So, I attended the mass and during the preach I went out for som minutes to take pictures of the tombs - I was alone ther , it was a child's play! 21:35, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Oploading directly to Commons: First load (correct, prepare Your photo to Your PC. Then click "Upload file" choose Your case: "own work", or other. etc. Fulfill the necessary informations (reasonable description, source, etc). Look for categories from similar image-pages. Find out reasonable name (not Cimg00456), and upload Your file under this name. You can edit and correct the text later, if necessary. OR: If You upload only to the German Wiki, there is an automatic way (bot?) to transfer it directly to Commons (see for exemple this: thumb|right|50px). These images will be automatically categorized as de.wikipedia . Ask the German Wiki for further help, I do not know this transfer methode very much. Source[edit]

Hi! A proper source never can be the image itself. Or can it tell you how old it is and whom it shows and so on. Please always give the place where the information to the picture is available. Otherwise you are just wasting time, which would usually lead to the deletion since there is no proper source. -- Cecil 16:30, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, Akela3!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
