Thomas Phillips

Thomas Phillips (1770 – 1845) was an English painter well-known for his history painting and portraits. During the early stages of his career it was the former that earned him most public recognition. However, after his election to the Royal Academy in 1808 he confined himself to painting portraits. He served as Professor of Painting at the Academy from 1825 to 1832. He is well-known for his portrait of William Blake, the famous engraver-poet, which was painted in 1807; it now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
