The Theatre Comique on Newark Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey existed from 1879 to about 1883. It was nicknamed the Bumbaloo. Prior to 1879 it was a legitimate theater, named Butler's Theater Comique, owned by Robert W. Butler. Control was wrested from the original owners by Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921) and his brother, John Jacob Lindauer (1840-1888). They served alcohol without a license and the customers were entertained by leg shows.
