Is there any way to use this template for users, that are just registered at local wikipedias? --Flominator 18:01, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, {{PD-user-wikimedia}} for wikipedia projects or {{PD-user-w}} for other projects (wikibooks etc). / Fred Chess 22:16, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! --Flominator 14:54, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note: This template can be used for other projects as well e.g. {{PD-user|Username|wikt:de}} or {{PD-user|Username|m}}. Rocket000 00:07, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

i18n[edit]

This template needs to be made available in more languages, as has been done with other licensing templates. I've added French in the main template, but if we do that for every language, the template will become too large. IMO, the ideal solution would be to have the displayed language depend on the viewer's interface language.

Also, I think these licensing templates need to be semi-protected, because a vandal could switch around the licenses with disastrous legal consequences -- if not for Wikimedia, then possibly for other users. Seahen 02:19, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:Example → No source[edit]

The default of User:Example is a very wrong idea, IMHO. I will change it to a completely different solution: if the author is not filled in, the template should behave like no source is specified (and therefore the image should be deleted, if that information is not added). See the corresponding change at Template talk:PD-author. --Mormegil 21:11, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nasty side effects[edit]

The last change has some nasty side effects like marking Image:Begijnhof 1.JPG as missing source (because this template is called from the self template). Can someone fix this or revert back to the old situation? Multichill 17:30, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

this query gives a list of pages which probably have this problem. Multichill 18:00, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see, but the problem is not in this template, but in {{Self}}: before my change, that image has said that it “has been released into public domain by its author, Example”, hasn’t it? {{PD-self}} should be used instead of {{PD-user}}; or Template:Self would need to be fixed to properly use this template (probably by sending the author parameter to the template, but that possibly might break other templates).
I cannot try your query, since I am not able to reach the toolserver again.
--Mormegil 21:05, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to fix this as soon as i can use AutoWikiBrowser here. Multichill 21:28, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Extend to all files[edit]

The English text now reads "This image has been released...". Can we change this to "This file has been released..."? I came across this file with the tag on it, and since it is a sound file, the text of the template doesn't make much sense. --CapitalR (talk) 00:01, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so:"[edit]

I've often been intrigued by this line, "In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so:" - what countries/situations would this apply to?

Maltese translation[edit]

{{edit protected}} Could you add the Maltese translation of this template? Chrisportelli (talk) 13:18, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done, thanks. Pruneautalk 15:11, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Texts for translatewiki[edit]

Please see Commons talk:Licensing/Archive 28#Review PD user/self texts. Multichill (talk) 10:51, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization and intewikis[edit]

{{Editprotected}} I've moved categorization (both {{In category|…}} template and the template's category) to the documentation subpage and I've connected this page to Wikidata so interwikis and the categorization parts of the template can be removed too. --tacsipacsi (talk) 11:39, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done Thanks for your help. --whym (talk) 14:28, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the localisation message located?[edit]

I'd like to enhance the Arabic translation for this template. Where is the Mediawiki localisation message located? --A. Gharbeia أحمد غربية (talk) 09:39, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Include metadata markup of user attribution[edit]

{{Edit request}}

Please consider deploying the following change: new version compare with original. This change removes the duplicate PD license information, that is already added by PD-Layout meta template. It additionally adds Machine-readable data markup for the username granting the (non)license. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:43, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Necessary expansion[edit]

When the user referenced by this template does not own a user page but the talk page or the ~commmonswiki should be linked instead, this template can't be used without errors. With the small expansion in the {{sandbox}} it is now possible to reference any combination of users or their talks or contributions, in commons (also ~commmonswiki) or elsewhere, and the user name (or par.3) will be displayed.

When the update is done

  • everything works as before - but in addition the complicated cases can be solved, as with other templates;
  • then I will update the documentation to explain also the new possibilities. -- sarang사랑 17:21, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done 4nn1l2 (talk) 15:11, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@4nn1l2 and Sarang: I have reverted this change because something was broken. In Sarang's version, the username was not displayed when typed into parameter |1=. De728631 (talk) 18:43, 15 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I just downgraded the protection level so that Sarang can edit the template themselves. 4nn1l2 (talk) 09:32, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
