Usefulness

We have over 2000 templates with some sort of internationalization. Why is this template called I18n (aka "internationalization") instead of previous ones? I think the template should be named after what it translates not that is translates. All {{I18n}} does is to waste 2 levels of template nesting to convert {{I18n|word}} to {{I18n/word}}. Why not use {{I18n/word}} directly or move it to {{word}}? --Jarekt (talk) 15:25, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

I consent with you, nevertheless the direct naming of a template it is not always realizable – e.g. {{Crop}} or {{Original}} have already been occupied by a template with another function: that is why I created this template, named after that it translates. I had also an idea to name it in another language, for instance {{Ořez}} instead of {{Crop}}, but although I really do not like English and have always serious problems to express my thoughts in the language, this way probably wouldn't be very helpful for most users. Utilization of some less intuitive English name like {{Cropping}} or {{Original work}} wouldn't be much better, in my opinion. So I thought it would be nice to offer an unique way for translating such simple collocations.

Using {{I18n/word}} is better than {{I18n|word}}, you are right.

I wonder if we would be better off moving template:topic to template:topics and not having Template:I18n/topic nest into Template:I18n/place by year by topic nest into Template:I18n/country by year by topic into Template:I18n/place by x by y into Template:Country by year by topic and then into the country templates. I don't think we are getting close to the limit but this is pretty complicated and subject to many possible attack points for problems. Ricky81682 (talk) 21:37, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

@Jarekt: Because turning tags like {{I18n/files}} and {{I18n/categories}} – for example – into templates named {{Files}} and {{Categories}} would cause a disaster; this also applies to tags like {{I18n/gender}} and many others, potentially most of them; ambiguous names. While the "i18n" prefix makes clear that's a multilingual tag. Daniele Fisichella 10:54, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Example?

Could someone add an example / use case to the description? I'm not 100% sure how to make the most use of it, and in what situations exactly this template would be useful. Like, does the template just help with internationalization in that it translates the word included in the template? Meaning that {{i18n|gender}} would render as Gender for someone who set their interface to English, and as Geschlecht for someone who set their interface to German? Or does the template support multiple translations of text? And if so, then where does the text go? E.g. could I use it the following way: {{i18n|en=Inscription of a monument|de=Inschrift auf einem Monument}}? Nakonana (talk) 12:15, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
