CC template[edit]

I wanted to put the source note into {{Information}} while keeping the CC template in a separate licence section, so I added a nocc parameter. {{geograph|…|…|nocc= }} (note the space after the last ‘=’) yields

Category sorting[edit]

I just changed the sorting of Category:Geograph images to be by Geograph image number rather than by Commons filename. My hope here is that this will make spotting duplicates easier, but if it turns out to be a bad idea for some reason I shan't be offended if the change gets reverted. --bjh21 15:34, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{Geograph-bi}}[edit]

I am proposing to rename this template to {{Geograph-bi}} in order to distinguish images from the Geograph British Isles project from those from the Geograph Deutschland project. I've recently created {{Geograph-de}} for images from the latter. It seemed to make sense to create a separate template rather than try to add additional parameters to this template which would be more complicated.

After renaming, the intention then would be to run my bot flagged account AdambroBot (talk · contribs) through the approximately 13,000 uses of the template to skip the redirect to the old name so that {{Geograph}} can be deleted if appropriate to reduce the potential for confusion.

I've been in contact with administrators from the two Geograph projects and found them happy to assist with these changes. Geograph Deutschland are now outputting Wiki markup using the {{Geograph-de}} template rather than {{Geograph}} so no further changes are expected to be necessary there. I've made the administrators of the Geograph British Isles project aware of the potential for some further minor changes to accommodate the new project. I'm informed that further Geograph projects could be introduced and so these changes could make it easier in the future. Adambro (talk) 10:10, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm struggling to come up with any other suitable alternatives. The obvious options could include "en" or "uk" but neither are accurate since the project doesn't cover just England or the United Kingdom. What specifically is the problem with "bi"? Adambro (talk) 14:21, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Main one is it doesn't mean "British Isles" under any use I'm aware of... And technically it's the ISO code for Burundi. Just use {{Geograph}} for the original project, and disambiguated template names for any other. Thanks/wangi (talk) 15:50, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
When I suggested "bi" I was simply looking for some initials to refer to the Geograph project for the British Isles, not necessarily an official code since of course there isn't an ISO code for the group of islands referred to as the British Isles. Whilst bi is the ISO code for the Republic of Burundi, I doubt there is going to be a Geograph project for that country any time soon and so the conflict is not really a problem. I think it is more likely to be confusing to have a {{Geograph}} template for the British Isles project and then adopt different names for any others. For consistency it is preferable to try adopt some kind of naming scheme. In the absence of any better alternatives to "bi", I'm inclined to go with that. Sorry, but "bi" is not intuitive and not used commonly. Therefore it only serves to confuse the matter for the primary and far far larger set of photos from the original Geograph website. Yes, there is now a German version, but it only has a handful of contributions (1500 or so) and there is no other scountry version that I'm aware of. In light of that why bother with a generic solution when there's no need currently? More constructively - if there ever is a large amount of related per-contry projects in the future then consider names such as {{Geograph Germany}}, {{Geograph UK and Ireland}}, ... /wangi (talk) 13:04, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:British_Isles_all.svg on Template:Geograph/layout[edit]

The vertical size of the image is currently 175px (for a width of 100px). With most screen sizes, this is much more than the text of the tag. Could it be reduced to, e.g. 70px? -- User:Docu at 00:28, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Link[edit]

Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 license should be linked[edit]

Spaces at the start of sort keys[edit]

Is it intentional that the sort keys in Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project generated by this template all have spaces at the start? For instance, the sort key for File:Coire Toaig - geograph.org.uk - 12345.jpg is ␣00012345 (where ␣ represents a space). This confused me quite a lot when I was trying to get Geograph Update Bot to start processing the category at a particular image number. If it's not intentional, I'd like to remove that space. This would confuse any existing tools that depend on the precise format of the sort key. --bjh21 (talk) 13:42, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Bjh21: it's intentional. We have it this way for most tracker templates where we use the id in the sortkey (for example {{Rijksmonument}}). I remember trying to switch it to without spaces on one of these templates and undoing that because something broken. Not sure what it was again, I think some MediaWiki logic kicked in that messed up the sortkey. I would just keep it this way, it's only cosmetic to change.
I see you are starting up user:Geograph Update Bot. That's very nice! It's a long time since I did the original mass upload with User:GeographBot. My ancient code is in https://github.com/multichill/toollabs/tree/master/bot/geograph , you might find something useful in there. Multichill (talk) 16:38, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replace map with correct one[edit]

While we're re-rendering 1.8 million pages, could I request that the map in {{Geograph/layout}} be changed from File:British Isles all.svg to File:Geograph Britain and Ireland scope.svg? ... or replace map with a better one[edit]

Inspired by the comment "Should find a better image" in {{Geograph/layout}}, I'd like to propose replacing the map image with File:Geograph depth small.png. This is the depth map from Geograph, and is sensibly licensed (unlike the Geograph logo). It's got squares and maps and green and red, and is prettier than the coverage map. Any objections? Here's what it would look like:

Category renaming[edit]

There are four such replacements to make. Unexpected behaviour of nocc[edit]

I was just caught out by having {{geograph |1=12345 |2=A N Other |attribution= |nocc= }} parsed as nocc being true (and omitting the CC template). I assumed from the example case with nocc being described as "optional" that if I left it with no value that option would be interpreted as being switched off. Should this template be changed so that nocc requires any value other than blank, to be treated as "on"? Or is this an acceptable way for a template to parse a field with no specified value? --Lord Belbury (talk) 11:16, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lord Belbury: That appears to be precisely how the nocc parameter is meant to be used, as explained higher up this page and on the template's documentation page: passing a single space as the parameter is the way to activate it. It might be possible to change it, but I expect most of the existing uses of the parameter would need to be updated first. --bjh21 (talk) 21:43, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. That's less than obvious from the documentation, and it seems unusual to me for "value=" (with or without the space) to mean "value is true". Given that the template is taking "nocc=X" to mean "replace the CC template with X, even if that's an empty string", and the documentation is literally saying ONLY use when separate CC-license tag is provided, would this make more sense as "replace_cc_with=", where the user must specify the licence tag in the template? If a value is given, use that in place of the default; if no value is given, change nothing (or throw an error message).
Would it be worth running a test to see how many pages actually use this option, by having "nocc= " also put images into a hidden category? --Lord Belbury (talk) 09:36, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed improvement to error checking[edit]

I'd like to propose an improvement to the part of the template the decides whether to put a file in Category:Images from Geograph Britain and Ireland with broken templates. At the moment we have this:

I've put my proposed version in Template:Geograph/sandbox.

The change adds a check that the Geograph photo identifier consists only of digits. This should help catch the fairly common case where someone swaps the user name and photo ID. It will also catch cases where a file uses {{Geograph from structured data}} and has two IDs in the structured data. The change also slightly simplifies the structure of the template by removing unnecessary nesting of {{#if}}. --bjh21 (talk) 22:06, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
