"... until the end" is not the same as "... until this ends"[edit]

The auto-translate feature ignores a necessary distinction. That is, it's done in too simple a manner, I'm afraid.

EN: left before {{{event|the event}}}.
DE: bis {{{event|zum Ereignis}}}.

This is correct if "before" is used as a preposition, i.e. if just a noun (+ article etc.) follows. However, "before" can also be used as a conjunction/subjunction, which introduces a full subordinate clause (including a verb). In that case, German (and possibly other languages as well) requires punctuation (a comma between the main clause and the subordinate clause). In the current template, this comma is missing and cannot manually be added. In fact, the distinction between the two grammar patterns is missing.

Example from a current competition, Commons:Photo challenge/2020 - November - Wharf:
EN: (...) until this challenge ends.
DE wrong: Es sind noch 20 Tage 22 Stunden bis dieser Wettbewerb endet.
DE correct: Es sind noch 20 Tage 22 Stunden, bis dieser Wettbewerb endet.

Fixing this will require template-programming skills that exceed my competence. So, I'd like to bring the matter to your attention on this Talk page. -- Martinus KE (talk) 13:28, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
