When the exact date of media creation is known, this template renders the words "Taken on" in the language specified in the user's preference followed by the date. The template automatically adds a "taken on" category using the exact date. If the exact date is not known, use the {{Taken in}} template. The English language distinguishes between the two terms: a photograph is "taken on" an exact day, date, or week, but is "taken in" a longer period of time, e.g., a week, month, season, year, or longer.

This template is generally used in the "date" parameter of the {{Information}} template.

The template automatically sets the following categories: corresponding subcategory of

The file type is detected with {{File type}}. The categorization can be suppressed with |cat=no (appropriate when the file is manually moved to any subcategory of the default target category, e.g. a country-specific subcategory).

Timezones: Note that the date/time used for categorization are assumed to be UTC, and so for example a photo taken in New Zealand on 2023-01-01 at 7AM will actually be categorized as 2022-12-31.
