Template parameters

ParameterDescriptionDefaultStatus
TitleThis is the original title given in the NARA catalog record.emptyoptional
Scope and contentIf an item has a "Scope and content" tab in its catalog record, include it here. These are notes written by the archivists.emptyoptional
General notesIf an item has a "General note(s):" field in its catalog record, include it here. These are notes written by the archivists.emptyoptional
DescriptionOther notes by and description by Wikimedians can go here.emptyoptional
NAID
ARC
This is the standard, unique ID which points to the item's specific catalog record in ARC (Archival Research Record). It is used to generate the URL for the record. This is absolutely required unless (rarely) the item is not cataloged in ARC, for example if it has been scanned independently by an on-site researcher.emptyoptional
Local identifierThis is an ID which does not have a standard form like ARC, but is used by the department which is responsible for the document. It is important if given, but only some documents have a local identifier.emptyoptional
CreatorThis is the creator of the record, which is usually not the same as the author. Typically, this is the agency whose records contain the document uploaded.emptyoptional
AuthorThis is the writer, artist, photographer, videographer, etc. who actually made the document. These are often not part of the catalog records, or might only be noted as an "index term," and so must be added manually.emptyoptional
LocationStill Picture Records Section, Special Media Archives Services Division (NWCS-S), National Archives at College Park, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD, 20740-6001.emptyoptional
DateDate of creationemptyoptional
Record groupThe record group, series, and file group information can all be found in the "Hierarchy" tab. The "record group" is the collection-level division of records, which typically includes the records of an entire agency.emptyoptional
Record group NAID
Record group ARC
Each record group should have its own ARC ID which will link to the record group's catalog record.emptyoptional
SeriesThe record group, series, and file group information can all be found in the "Hierarchy" tab. The "series" is a smaller subset of the record group arranged according to some unifying characteristic like a common author or event.emptyoptional
Series NAID
Series ARC
Each series should have its own ARC ID which will link to the record group's catalog record.emptyoptional
File unitThe record group, series, and file group information can all be found in the "Hierarchy" tab. The "file unit" is another yet-smaller optional subgrouping of the series. Only some items belong to file units, while most will belong directly to a series.emptyoptional
File unit NAID
File unit ARC
Each file unit, if one exists, should have its own ARC ID which will link to the record group's catalog record.emptyoptional
Variant control numbersGenerally, most items will have at least one variant control number listed, the obsolete "NAIL Control Number." There may also be multiple NAILs. These can be included for completeness here. There may be other special control numbers which should also be included. Use manual line breaks ("") to separate control numbers.emptyoptional
TIFFUse "yes" to indicate that the file uploaded is a high-resolution TIFF master file of the original National Archives scan.emptyoptional
TextUse "no" if there is no text to transcribe. (Note: Depends on the 'TIFF' parameter being set to "yes".)emptyoptional
Other versionsTIFF files are intended to be converted to JPEG for graphical documents and DjVu for textual documents. As well, TIFF files for multi-page documents will be uploaded as separate files. Use "Other versions" to display other pages for the same document as well as derivative files using <gallery> and labeling the pages and file formats with captions, as was done here.emptyoptional
DerivativeIf the file is a derivative and not the original file, set this parameter to yes or similar in order to avoid the message about not changing the file.emptyoptional
mediumField inherited from {{Artwork}}'s template.emptyoptional
dimensionsField inherited from {{Artwork}}'s template.emptyoptional
institutionField inherited from {{Artwork}}'s template. Use to overwrite the default value{{Institution:National Archives and Records Administration}}optional
