Untitled[edit]

The image shown in Wikicommons for this painter: Henryk Hippolytovitch Siemiradzki (1843-1902). Oil on canvas, 1889, entitled Phryne .... etc. may not be by the actual artist. I have a photo taken in my presence at the Russian Museum, Saint Petersburgh of the full scene by this painter. It is approximately 7 feet by 15 feet and dominates a large exhibit room. It is the scale that would be expected of this artist at this time. The WikiCommons description of size is in inches, and is of somewhat less than half of the full size scene. While it is common practice to create model sketches in preparation for larger works, they are almost always 'suggestive' rather than exact. It is more likely that an artist has copied some portion of the original work. It is possible that although my photo of the large scene is truthful as to size and existence and location, I may not have the painter correctly attributed. If so I would appreciate correction. I would make the photo available on request. Richard - 11 January 2009
