Royal Academy[edit]

Firstly the ship is HMS Bombay, launched in 1828. She was destroyed by fire on 14 December 1864, off Montevideo. Not 22 December 1824 as noted on the "Russell-Coates Art Gallery version" by George Cochrane Kerr (c.1825–1907). Kerr painted the scene twice, according to the National Maritime Museum. Secondly, on one of the Kerr pictures under his signature, it seems to indicate that its a copy of this painting by Admiral Richard Brydges Beechey. See http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/110377.html#BGLiQsTBPkQG2y6Z.99. According to Wikipedia Beechey retired from the Navy in 1864. Beechey's painting (this one) might be the one that was displayed at the RA in 1866. According to the book "Gerard Manley Hopkins and the Victorian Visual World" By Catherine Phillips, Fellow and Director of Studies in English Downing College. If that true then this painting dates as 1866-1867? Broichmore (talk) 11:41, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
