Nederlands: Dat Nederlanders aan slavernij en slavenhandel deden in Suriname en op de Caribische eilanden weet iedereen wel. Maar in Azië deden Nederlanders dat ook, en op minstens net zo'n grote schaal. Historicus Wim Manuhutu (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) vertelt je in deze aflevering van de Werkplaats hoe totslaafgemaakten (we gebruiken dat woord nu liever dan 'slaven') onmisbaar waren in de Nederlandse koloniën in Azië. Overal in wat nu Indonesië is werkten zij op plantages, in de mijnen en in de huishouding, maar ze werden bijvoorbeeld ook ingezet bij de bouw van forten en de aanleg van wegen. En dat duurde honderden jaren: vanaf de tijd van de VOC tot en met de tijd dat de kolonie officieel Nederlands-Indië heette. En ook al schafte Nederland de slavernij officieel halverwege de negentiende eeuw af, op sommige plekken van Nederlands-Indië duurde het tot in de twintigste eeuw voor het echt voorbij was. #molukken #ketikoti #suriname #indonesia
