Description
English: The tug gunboat USS Thomas Freeborn, during an engagement with Confederate forces at Matthias Point, Viriginia, 1861. Thomas Freeborn was built for merchant service as a tugboat in Williamsburg, New York, by Lawrence & Foulks in 1860, and requisitioned by the US Navy for service as a gunboat in 1861. This image is a detail from a much larger image published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, 1861.
