the life at San Domingo had anattraction for him which he did not wish to resist, 296 SAN DOMINGO DEL PALENQUE. and he decided to make this place his home, andmarried a native who possessed, in her own right, some land in the neighbourhood.* Dr. Coller was a man of varied and extensiveinformation and an excellent linguist. He haddevoted much time, not only to the investigationof the Indian antiquities, but also to the study ofthe geology and botany of the district, and I wasmuch pleased when he proposed to accompany me toPalenque. As we approached the ruins, the forest was sothick that we were not able to see anything beyondthe track which had been cleared for us by our men.At a distance of al^out three Spanish leagues fromSan Domingo, we came to the borders of a smallrunning stream. Dr. Coller stopped and said thatat this point we should dismount, as we had arrivedat our destination. We then went up a steep slope,
