towardsthe east, the great building, called the Casa delGobernador, with its terraces and adjacent pyramidsstanding out high and distinct. The sun had dis-appeared below the horizon, and the sky wasbrilliant with the vivid colouring of a tropicalsunset. The Casa del Gobernador was clear andwell defined in the midst of this magnificent frameof evening splendour, looking scarcely less beautifulthan a Greek temple on some lofty headland, whenseen at twilight from ^gean seas. It was getting dark when we slowly passed roundthe base of a Teocalli, and it was night when wehalted at the hacienda. The proprietor and theagent were both absent, but the mayor-domo re-ceived me with much kindness. He gave me a large 2 A 338 UXMAL. room next to one which he told me had been occu-pied by the Empress Charlotte when she visitedUxmal in 1866. The next morning, after givingAnastasio directions to join me at the Casa delGobernador and to bring with him my hammockand provisions, I walked out to the ruins.
