Summary[edit]

Description
English: Perform this amazing experiment at home with MEL Science:

https://melscience.com/US-en/experiments/transmutation/

Safety

  • Put on protective gloves and eyewear.
  • Conduct the experiment on the plastic tray.
  • Keep a bowl of water nearby during the experiment.
  • Remove protective gloves before lighting the candles.

Disposal

  • Dispose of solid waste together with household garbage.
  • Pour solutions down the sink.
  • Wash with an excess of water.

Step-by-step instructions 1. Put a copper coin ontoa piece of another metal—zinc. 2. We need high temperature for this experiment. 3. Add the zinc salt solution to the copper coin and zinc clip. When we heat the system, some zinc atoms leave the zinc clip surface, turn into ions and stay in the solution. 4. While the copper coin and zinc clip contact one another, zinc ions settle on the coin surface. There, they turn back into zinc atoms. This results in the silvery cover formation.

5. When heated, zinc atoms on the coin surface “mix” with copper atoms. As a result a golden colored alloy of copper and zinc called brass forms.
