Description
Deutsch: Zwei Kaufleute sitzen mit ihren Waren in einer Art Innenhof. Die Männer Männer erinnern an Figuren aus Gemälden der sogenannten Bamboccianti, niederländische Maler, in Rom die Genreszenen des niederen Volkes bevorzugten. Toorenvliets Händler sind in weite knielange, mit Pelz gefütterte Kaftane gekleidet. Sie tragen spitz zulaufende kurze Lederstiefel.
Leiden, die Heimatstadt des Toorenvliets, war in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts das Zentrum der niederländischen Tuchindustrie. Dort wurden unterschiedlich gemusterte Stoffe für den eigenen und den orientalischen Markt produziert. Toorenvliets Kaufleute wirken europäisch. Da er in seinen Bildern immer unterschiedliche Teppiche malte, könnten dies wirklich vorhandene Teppiche gewesen sein
