English: The sea coastes of Portugal betwene Camino & Montego, even as the countrie there aboutes is lying and situated with all the havens thereof exactly done, and corected with great dilligenceBound sheet. Hand coloured engraving. Scale: [circa 1:400,000 (bar)]. North at 278 degrees. The bar scales are in English, Spanish and Dutch leagues. Additional Places: Caminha, Vila do Conde, Porto, Aveiro. The chart contains one coastal profile. Salt pans are depicted. It is decorated with two ships and two sea creatures.
A chart from Anthony Ashley's English edition of 'The Mariners Mirrour'. Lord Howard of Effingham ordered Waghenaer's sea atlas 'De Spieghel der Zeevaerdt' to be translated. It was so popular that 'waggoner' became the English term for a book of charts. |
