English: The sea coastes betweene Dover & Orfordness: wherein is conteined the most famous River of Thames with all the sands, bankes, flats, & sholdes there abouts according to their trew situation and appearingBound sheet. Hand coloured engraving. Scale: [circa 1:400,000 (bar)]. North at 096 degrees. The bar scales are in English, Spanish and Dutch leagues. The chart contains two coastal profiles. It is decorated with two ships and four sea creatures.
A chart from Anthony Ashley's English edition of 'The Mariners Mirrour'. Lord Howard of Effingham ordered Waghenaer's sea atlas 'De Spieghel der Zeevaerdt' to be translated. It was so popular that 'waggoner' became the English term for a book of charts. |
