n watersfrom the Piocene gravels rising along the faultline and forcing their way through the overly-ing denser materials. It is now evident that the Pliocene bedsthat have a thickness of more than 4000 feetin the hills south of Pleasanton, as pointedout in my former report, dip northward atan angle varying from ten to twenty-flve de-grees, and pass far below the valley floor.The rocks forming the south face of thehills on the north side of the valley belongto an older series, and the Pliocene bedscannot therefore pass beneath them, butmust either bend very abruptly upward, orthey must have been let down by a faultagainst the older beds. In either case thewaters that enter the Pliocene gravels in theregion south of the valley must follow downalong their bedding planes and rise to thesurface along the north side of the valleywhere the fault or the upturned beds allowthem to escape. The accompanying figure, representinga north-south section across the valleys, willmake my meaning clear:
