Description
English: The departure of Prince William Henry from Greenwich for Hanover, 1783

This shows the departure of Prince William Henry for Hanover from Greenwich on 31 July 1783 in the 'Princess Augusta' yacht, here flying the Prince's standard. The yacht was commanded for the journey by Cleveley's friend and patron Captain George Vandeput. Cleveley, who was a Naval purser as well as an artist, sailed with him as a supernumerary in the royal suite. His view of the Prince's arrival at Stade, Prussia, en route to Hanover, is also in the collection (see PAH5245). After the Prince became Duke of Clarence, Cleveley was subsequently appointed Marine Draughtsman to him, and later the Prince of Wales. Signed by the artist and dated.
