Description
English: The barque Geelong

A portrait of the three-masted barque ‘Geelong’ which was built on the Clyde in 1847. The ship is shown in full sail, broadside-on, flying a blue burgee from the mainmast on which is written the name of the ship which is shown off the coast of Hong Kong with settlements visible in the background. There is a British paddle steamer behind its bow and British frigates can be seen at anchor on the right. Two figures can be seen on board leaning over the side to take soundings. The inscription reads ‘ British Barque Geelong T Bowman Commandr’.

This painting is one of a pair with BHC3357.
