Inscribed: "The Screw Steam Ship "Australasian" 2800 tons - 700 Horse Power. Belonging to the European and Australian Royal Mail Company. Hull and Engines constructed by J and G Thomson, Glasgow".

'Australasian' is depicted in the centre of the composition in choppy seas. Two other vessels appear on the horizon.
