Summary[edit]

Description

Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix

Steinway & Sons earned the “Grand Gold Medal of Honor and Merit” for piano
manufacturing and engineering in the 1867 Paris International Exposition.[1]

The first American company to win the
prestigious award, Steinway & Sons
revolutionarized the piano industry with
a host of innovative parents and a
factory that expanded into an industrial
campus with its own lumberyard,
iron foundries and post office.

In 1880, C. F. Theodore Steinway
introduced a rim-bending press
that could shape inner and cuter
rims simultaneously, resulting in
the grand piano's unmistakeable
elegant curves. This represented just
one of Steinway & Sons' successful
efforts to simplify the manufacturing
process while also creating strong,
stable, and reliable instruments.
