Summary[edit]
DescriptionSt. James's Square, backs of houses - geograph.org.uk - 1537585.jpg |
English: St. James's Square 23-26, backs of the houses. The only surviving segment of St. James's Square in the New Town, which was swept away by the building of the St. James's Shopping Centre in 1972. Although the Square was visibly run-down, howls of protest by conservation groups were ignored in favour of the major Brewing interests behind the redevelopment. Thus, an integral part of the original New Town was lost forever. The street from which this photograph is taken was named James Craig Walk, although these buildings are the only part he would recognise, were he alive today. It was in a basement in the Square that glass-plate negatives from the 1840s, belonging to the pioneering photographer Thomas Vernon Begbie, were found shortly before demolition and rescued by a local councillor. |
