English: Seattle is a seaport town, and many sailors ended up here after they grew too old for the hard work at sea. The Seamen's Institute and several other charitable groups provided places for these retirees to live.
This photo, taken on a rainy day around 1906, shows the outside of the Seamen's Home on Western Avenue. Residents would have had a good view of the bay and waterfront from the porches at the rear of the building. The home was located right behind the Pike place Market.
