“Washington April 3rd 1838
Mr Hunt
I send my note for $1000 to renew the old one with Mr DeGroffs draft for $26, which with the balance due on the United States note of $20 inclosed to you some days since will pay the back interest on the old note up to the 4 April, once the discount for the three months to run.
I hope Mr Allen will do me the favor to indorse the note.
I can get no treasury notes at present, or drafts, on the New York Bank, until we put or appropriations bills through congress – Then we shall be able to get any currency we desire. I am in hope to leave here in June – it’s not im possible but my wife will return with her Brother who is to be in New York on the 21 April Members of Congress are sick and loosing their lives one after the other in rapid succession – we attended the funeral of Mr Chl [Kim?] to day, making three of our House, within the last five weeks, and all good sub treasury men.
