עלי השקד נושרים בסתיו והפרחים מקדימים לפרוח עם בוא האביב. בשנים קרות במיוחד עלולה הפריחה להתאחר. הפרחים נפתחים לפני ניצני העלים. טרפיהם של עלי השקד מוארכים וגם פטוטרותיהם ארוכות. הפרחים לבנים, לעתים ורדרדים ומפרישים צוף. הבשלת הפירות חלה זמן רב לאחר הפריחה, כשישה חודשים ואף יותר מכך.
