Description
Cette toile coupée en deux à la fin du XVIII° siècle a été reconstituée : la partie donnée en 1825 a été réunie à celle de gauche achetée en 2010. Ce dessus-de-porte appartenait au mécène de Poussin, Cassiano dal Pozzo. Le site de Grottaferrata abrite les amours de Vénus et d'Adonis.

Inscriptions Au revers : AGRI PROPE CRYPTAM FERRATAM PROSPECTUS A. NICO (inscription découverte à l'occasion d'une restauration en 1978, au revers de la toile originale qui avait été rentoilée)
Notes Propriété de Cassiano Dal Pozzo, un des grands mécènes du peintre, il a été au XVIIIe siècle amputé de sa partie gauche, un Dieu fleuve dans un paysage (inv. 2010.14.1), certainement pour des raisons commerciales. Il a fallu attendre deux cents ans pour apprécier à nouveau l'ampleur de la composition d'origine: les deux tableaux réunis forment le Paysage de Grottaferrata. Exposés pour la première fois l'un à côté de l'autre à l'occasion de l'exposition de Fort Worth en 1988, ils sont montrés dans le même cadre à New York en 2008.
