Description |
English: This portrait was commissioned to Frans Pourbus the Younger, Maria de' Medici's court painter, by her aunt, Grand Duchess Christina of Lorraine. A portrait of the reigning king – Louis XIII, Maria's son – of the same dimensions was commissioned too, but wrongly Pourbus painted a matching portrait of Henri IV, the Queen's husband. Because of its high quality, they decided to keep the portrait of the late King. This two versions decorated for years Palazzo Pitti's apartements, where they still are; two other versions in 1613 for the «series of the most serene princes», now called «serie aulica», a collection of portraits of the most important members of the House of Medici (placed at Uffizi Gallery's corridors) |
