English: An open ruff is one opened at the front. Sometimes called the "Elizabethan compromise," it widened and attached to the outer edges of the neckline near the shoulders, leaving the decolletage uncovered. It was usually supported by some sort of wire frame called a supportasse. Marie de Medici refined the idea into what became known as the Medici collar.
