Description |
English: Description in Flemish paintings C. 1600-C. 1800 III, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2010, cat.no. 70:
Inscription: “Carl I Stuart, Konung i England Skottland och Irland. Född 1600 d. 29 nov. halsh. 1649 d. 9 febr.” [Charles I Stuart, King of England, Scotland and Ireland. Born 29 November 1600, executed 9 February 1649] Inscription (on reverse): “Gifvit till Gripsholm af H.K.H. Kronprinsen Oscar. Efter ett porträtt af Van Dyk eller säkert af hans goda skola” [Donated to Gripsholm by HRH Crown Prince Oscar. Based on a portrait by Van Dyk or certainly from his excellent school], “N. 1119” Technical notes: The support consists of an oval piece of fabric woven finely and evenly using a twill technique. The fabric has been bleached. Tacking edges of 2.5 cm have been preserved around the entire oval stretcher. The ground consists of a beige/whiteish prefabricated ground. The paint layer is semi-transparent in the background. The portrait is rendered opaquely with a few highlights in the earrings, the star of the order and the lace on the collar. A copy of no. 69 in which Karl I is portrayed halflength. The copy depicts only the head and shoulders and is oval unlike no. 69. Probably a late 19th century copy. Provenance: Gripsholm inventory 1831. Bibliography: Cat. Gripsholm I, 1951, p. 168. This copy, painted in the 19th century, is probably based on the 17th century copy of the original that also belongs to Gripsholm Castle (no. 69). Unlike this latter portrait, here we have a portrait in an oval format. The portrait which is a stylised copy executed simply is based therefore, like no. 69, on an original by Anthony van Dyck in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden (inv. no. 1038). This late 19th century copy wich was a gift from Crown Prince Oscar also possesses a carved frame with laurel leaves surmounted by a royal crown.
